Removed Promotional Information[edit]

I wanted to explain my edits for the town planner and other official who have been turning this into an advertisement for the town. This is not the purpose of Wikipedia- that is what your town sponsored website is for, or your social media- so the following things have been removed from the article:

* A major downtown revitalization project is currently underway - which includes the installation of brick pavers along Main Street- First this had no citation. All information must have coverage in WP:RS to be included. Social media and self published sources are not acceptable. Second- this is not encyclopedic news unless there is significant coverage in multiple sources saying why this is of more than local interest.
* The Town provides police, water, and sanitary sewer services. Not sure why this statement is here- 99% of towns in America provide this. Its fluff at best.
* The entire section on the milsborro fire and police department. This is not of encyclopedic value unless there is some historical or newsworthy importance to the fire department- and if so, it needs support from WP:RS.... not the fire department website- and especially not just the words "Fire Department Website" without actual links or information.

Just a suggestion- if you are an elected or paid official of the town- you need to make a COI statement, and I would recomend requesting changes on this talk page instead of just making them yourself. Wikipedia frowns on edits by editors closely connected to the subject. I've added this page to my watchlist and would be happy to help you develop the page and improve it. Nightenbelle, the reason why I mentioned that the Town provides police, water, and sanitary sewer services is because I wanted to tell readers what the Town does NOT provide as much as I wanted to tell them what it does provide (if not more so). In my opinion, this is especially important given that a lot of Millsboro's newer residents come from larger cities that provide more services (e.g., trash collection), and I want to manage expectations on the front end if someone is considering moving here. At any rate, if there is a better way to convey the message, go for it! :-) Take care. - Town of Millsboro (talk) 23:53, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Information for new residents belongs on your chamber of commerce or town website. Not wikipedia. We are not promotion for your town- we are an encyclopedia. People do not come here for information on services of towns they are considering moving to- they come here for historical, or newsworthy information. So no, that information does not belong here. Nightenbelle (talk) 16:03, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nightenbelle, there are several recent stories about the Downtown Revitalization Project.[1][2][3][4] Is this sufficient? - Town of Millsboro (talk) 00:53, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No, this is not worthy of going in an encyclopedia. Its standard, and of local interest only. Not until its beyond average, normal, run of the mill stuff does it qualify for WP. Again- this belongs on your local chamber of commerce page and we are not going to be a substitute for that. Nightenbelle (talk) 17:22, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nightenbelle, how's this for a COI statement? "I am an employee of the Town of Millsboro. My responsibilities include economic development and public relations." - Town of Millsboro (talk) 00:58, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not my area of expertise. I would advise reading the COI policy, once you change your user name and get yourself unblocked. 17:23, 29 March 2021 (UTC)

Thank You[edit]

I appreciate you explaining, Nightenbelle, why so many of my changes were "undone." I had grown confused and frustrated as to why this was happening; I figured I was simply dealing with small-ego moderators who had something to prove. At any rate, while I obviously wanted to promote the Town (albeit innocently), I also simply wanted to contribute. Admittedly, I tend to take a learn-as-I-go approach to things, and this obviously didn't work in the case in question!

There are a number of solid, helpful edits that I could make to the page that are NOT promotional in nature in and of themselves. There are a variety of news articles that could be used as citations if this would be satisfactory. Please let me know.

If I may, I would respectfully request that you and other moderators not equate helpful information with promotional information. There is, in fact, some overlap between the two sometimes.

Anyway, in your opinion, where is the best place to start in terms of making the page better? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Town of Millsboro (talkcontribs) 23:43, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would suggest you post the proposed changes here on the talk page, and let an uninvolved editor actually change the article- in essence, that gives the WP page a peer-review. That is how most people with a direct connection request changes to articles. IE- if I wanted to change something on United Healthcare's page- thats how I would have to handle it since I work for them. I'd post on the talk page what I wanted to change, and another editor would review and make the actual change is it was helpful, or provide feedback if not. I'll be monitoring the page- so I should be able to respond to you within 24 hours most times. :-) Nightenbelle (talk) 15:36, 24 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Nightenbelle, may we start by adding the fact that the Millsboro Police Department is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA®)?[1] - Town of Millsboro (talk) 23:39, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No. We may not add that because it is pointless promotion. Almost every town in America has an accredited police force. That is not worth noting in an encyclopedia. This is not an advertisement for the town- it is an encyclopedia. Only newsworthy things or unique things should be included besides the basic facts such as location etc.
Nightenbelle, while many agencies may be "accredited," few are accredited by CALEA. I would respectfully argue that this is, therefore, in fact, relevant information. (Note that I am a Town employee and have been told that, as such, have a COI.) - 192.119.222.106 (talk) 21:41, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

History[edit]

I have started expanding the history section- as that is the easiest for me to research as a start. Once that is a bit more developed, I'll try to look into more modern local bits that suit a WP article. Nightenbelle (talk) 01:26, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nightenbelle, while I appreciate you adding content, the State of Delaware does not, in fact, have "townships"; that's a Pennsylvania and New Jersey "thing." Delaware has "hundreds," and Millsboro is located in the Dagsboro Hundred. Hundreds do not have governments like townships do. At any rate, while I have largely given up on trying to make improvements to the page at this point, I would ask that someone eliminate any reference to Millsboro being a township. Current Events[edit]

This article was published on the front page of the Delaware State News today. Nightenbelle, if there is anything of interest to you there, please add it to the Wikipedia article. Thank you.
