IRL, Champ Car and other such nonsense

FCYTravis: are you sure about the non-Indy 500 numbers? There's no question that they were lower (not my fault, naturally), but aren't the broadcast ratings on ABC (only) for the other (Sunday afternoon) races marignally better? (I know that they aren't comparable to NASCAR, football, etc.) Now, I will admit that even I don't watch much of what's on, what, ESPN2, on cable? Aren't its ratings usually around that level except for college basketball? Is a 0.2 on ESPN2 spectacularly bad, or just average for something of a fringe network? Rlquall 01:34, 23 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Unfortunately, yes, 0.2 is pretty spectacularly bad - testpattern. It's about what the average Champ Car race got on SPIKE TV and that's atrocious even for SPIKE. It's clear nobody at any open-wheel series has any clue how to market, but I digress... I can dig up the various threads I saw ratings posted on, but suffice to say the league set some new records for bad ratings... I believe they only had five or six races all year break the 1.0 barrier, and that's counting the Indy 500...

By comparison, back in the 1990s halcyon days, CART/PPG IndyCar World Series got 2s, on average, on ABC. We've devolved.

On the bright side, for both series, attendance seems to be continually strong - don't know if you saw IRL Richmond but they damn near filled the stands. Way better than 03. Same for Nazareth. It's a paradox... And no, the ratings aren't either of ours fault, I watch everything I can with wings and without fenders... but someone upstairs in HQ needs a pink slip, because what we have is some good product with no marketing on both sides of the Split. Why Spike TV remains in business at all is beyond me, and why they think that IRL is a good mix with "wrasslin", battle-bots, and reruns of The Dukes of Hazzard, but, now, I really digress.

I didn't realize that it was just a "2" in the PPG days. 1.0, unfortunately in this day of fragmentation, sounds good.

If you think that SAFER needs its own article, go for it if you think that you are up to writing it. That's a very good idea. Now that NASCAR/ISC is behind it, it's here to stay and probably will only get better.

As to why I gave up on CART, it's pretty easy. One day I was watching the broadcast of the Gran Prix race on Belle Isle, Michigan, one of the most beautiful venues for motorsports imaginable. They announced that they were reducing the number of laps to keep it under the time limit. Now, I realize that is a common way of FIA doing things in F1, but as an American I was incensed. That to me would be just like saying, "Well, it's obvious that today's Lions/Packers game is going to run too long, so the fourth quarter will be only seven minutes." I understand shortening races for rain; that can and should and sometimes must be done. But to put a time clock on a non-endurance race, well, it's just too unAmerican for me. That's when I pretty much restricted my open-wheel viewing to IRL. IRL has gotten a little more popular here in the Nashville area just for bringing one its top races to the relatively new superspeedway near here, something NASCAR is unlikely to do for the forseeable future, if ever. There may have been some people who went to that event free, obviously I don't know everyone, but I am yet to meet someone who said, "O, yeah, I got a free ticket," but maybe some of the people who said that their companies bought the tickets, maybe the companies received them free, I don't know.

Not to waste any more of your time, but I keep hoping that as the Hulman-George relationsip with NASCAR grows that some of that old France marketing magic will rub off, but it mostly doesn't seem to have happened yet. I will say that the IRL drivers made all kinds of local TV and radio appearances here before the race and that the non-Americans spoke better English than I was accustomed to or expecting and were just "exotic" enough to wow all of the female air personalities. Maybe that's not how one would want to see it come back to popularity in an ideal world, but one does what one can with the circumstances one is in, right?

BTW, you're not wasting my time... it's not like I have anything better to do ;) As for Champ Car's time limits... that's actually a TV thing. Back in the day, ABC/ESPN refused to run the race broadcasts over-time: so if Champ Car simply went the full lap distance, at best there'd be no winner interview and at worst the end of the race wouldn't have been on TV at all. So, the necessary evil of TV window time limits was instituted. I'm no big fan of it either but it seems to be here to stay.

Wikipedia way of doing things

Hi, when you added this edit you put your comment into the middle of mine, at the same indent level, cutting my first paragraph off from my signature at the end of the second paragraph, and thereby making it look as if you'd written that first paragraph. Wikipedia:Talk page#Sandards and conventions of writing and layout gives some guidance on how to keep Talk: pages from getting confusing.

Also, when you edited Champ Car, you didn't add any Edit summary - that instruction page says: Always fill the summary field (emphasis in the original). Please make sure to fill them in. Yeah, I noticed. I added it to 85... and will do a couple more. It seems that for all the two-digit routes, the code section number is simply the two-digit number plus 3. For the three-digit routes, drop the leading digit and add a 4 or 5 as necessary - i.e. Route 101 is Section 401, Route 299 is Section 599. Past Route 299/Section 599, this system entirely breaks down and it's just at seemingly random (though numerical) order - Section 607.1 is Route 371, Section 620 is Route 680, etc. --FCYTravis 06:15, 10 May 2005 (UTC)

This is rather circular logic, isn't it? We could also come to the conclusion that the Holocaust never happened and that the Apollo moon landings were filmed in a movie studio using this logic.

I see you made some edits on the article page; welcome to the FairTax article. I'm not trying to 'claim' or 'own' this article, but I would like to see a broader base of contributors, regardless of viewpoint. This article is one those that seem to attract a lot of anonymous attention, so thanks for taking an interest.

Please stop by again and make some more edits, this article needs 'em. Cleaning up that mess at the bottom of the page like you did is especially appreciated.

Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal/3

PBurka pointed out that an important omission from this proposal: a band could meet WP:MUSIC criterion #5 (sharing a member with a famous band) and still be speedily deletable by this criterion. I've added a sentence to the proposal to reflect this: it now reads An article about a musician or music group that does not assert having released at least one album, nor having had media coverage, nor having a member that is or was also part of a well-known music group. If the assertion is disputed or controversial, it should be taken to VFD instead. Please consider if you support this new wording, and change your vote if not. Please see the page - it was inadvertently closed because someone did not create a new VFD page, thus the new discussion showed up on the June 24 VFD page. I'm on a mission to close out the old VFD pages that are hanging around, and I didn't notice the dates, just the long string of Keep votes. I've copied the votes to a *new* VFD page and properly linked it from the page and the VFD page. In the future, please create new VFDs properly - with a name different than the old one. Lola valley merge

It appears that you merged the article into Redford Township, Michigan and then deleted it. However, AIUI the GFDL requires that attribution be preserved, which means the original article must be kept (as a redirect) and the source named in the edit summary for the merge. — Gwalla | Talk 6 July 2005 02:24 (UTC)

A VfD cleanup suggestion.

When possible, I'd recommend not cleaning up after VfDs (especially deleting articles) that you voted on unless they was a truly overwhelming vote. Avoiding these will prevent anyone from accusing you of having a conflict of interest in close votes. Since there is no hard and fast standard for what is "close", it makes sense to me to always err on the side of caution. (Trying to keep admins in the best possible light.) Persistent vandal

Hi, I've never had to report a persistent vandal before. It seems that User: 65.216.119.103 is going to random pages and changing important facts (dates, names, other things). He's changing pages as fast as I can fix his destruction. He's obviously doing it on purpose, and I don't know wat to do (except that I saw you in the recent changes logs doing admin stuff.) Thank you for your help closing out VfD discussions. As I'm sure you know, we're badly backlogged and can use all the help we can get. I did want to let you know that something happened a couple of the discussions you closed tonight. Of the three discussion pages for Gebäude, Schlafenszeit and Warnung!, and An Untitled Album and Erfahrungsgemaß, only the first had a {{subst:vt}} at the top and only the last had the {{subst:vb}} at the bottom. The page history is confused - not showing your closures at all. I can't figure out if this was a database error or a misunderstanding of the deletion process. Link Spam Question

I had a question regarding an edit which was made over on the Abercrombie_&_Fitch page where a link was removed. I am guessing you declared this link spam and removed it. I disagree with your edit there. As an example of similar links please see the Wal-mart page. I see similar links included "critcism" section as well as the "articles and reports" section. If the link was placed under the wrong heading that is fine, but it did in fact add relevant and factual information to the topic.

Please respond as I don't want to run afoul of the rules.

Why is it that all your protestations serve only to reinforce every prejudice of Southerners I've ever heard? I like the South, actually. Spend quite a bit of time there working. Just got back from Birmingham, Alabama, as it happens. Was in Daytona Beach in July. On my way to Danville, Virginia in October. Nice folks there.
