  • Delete. A possible future head of a student debating society, even the Oxford Union, is not yet noteworthy. DJ Clayworth 14:52, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • 'keep Who posted it initially? As a former colleague of his, it might be worth my raising the points that that he's already been elected so is a definite future head in a couple of months' time. Also was Ruzwana Bashir's deputy for approx. six months with his own rather large portfolio so if she is noteworthy then there can't be much justification for removing him.
  • delete - vanity, nothing more - Trick 15:27, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • comment It's only vanity if he posted it... and one assumes he didn't!! I stand by my first point. Are any undergraduate Oxford presidents worthy of mention? None have (yet) achieved anything beyond their association with the society... surely that wider issue is of relevance here.
  • comment Then Ruzwana Bashir should also be deleted. If she stays, he should too.
  • Delete - There is a category for Presidents of the Oxford Union, but all that I checked were notable for other reasons as well. It doesn't seem that this by itself makes someone notable. I will put the article about Ruzwana Bashir on the VfD also. --BM 17:59, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Comment - Well, it seems that the Ruzwana Bashir article was already up for deletion (twice) and escaped, although the circumstances of the voting seem to have been very chaotic with Bashir herself wanting the article deleted because of possible libel issues. In any case, some of the people who voted for keeping that article did so because Bashir was alleged to have been the first UK-born, Asian female to be President of the Union (although this may not be true). 3 Presidents are elected per year to an undergraduate organization whose fame rests mainly on the prominence of its invited speakers and former members. The current Presidents are people who, when elected, are about 20 year-old University students who have never done anthing more notable than getting into a famous University and winning a student election. --BM 18:15, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete: College club presidents are not noteworthy qua club presidencies. When he gains a majiscule for his surname and achieves things in life, he will be encyclopedic, but not now. Geogre 20:34, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. Unfortunately (IMHO) "vanity" here has a very different defintion than the real world. Still subject seems non-notable from an encyclopedic point of view. Niteowlneils 21:23, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete, let's say it's nn. Wyss 00:33, 25 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. I don't care whether it's vanity or non-notability... If kept, move to title with upper-case last name, btw. - Andre Engels 15:33, 25 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Ha! I didn't notice the uncapitalized last name... "proof" it's utter vanity. Wyss 19:46, 25 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep Well I can add this for sure - it's NOT vanity because I posted it and I'm not him! The uncapitalised last name is because I'm a newbie at this! and I thought you weren't all supposed to bite me! I read it! I will stick to my earlier comment though - if RT is nn, then Ruzwana Bashir should also be too. Put her up for deletion and I will accept you may have a point, as it stands you're being inconsistent and unfair. --Soporo 01:31, 26 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Comment on BM - he is entirely accurate re what current Union Presidents have achieved. They are frequently people to 'watch' for future success, but rarely notable for anything else in their early 20s. Saying that, there are few student elections more difficult to win or all-consuming than those for the Presidency of the Oxford Union. Other points seem mostly fair. Incidentally, it is true that Bashir is the first UK-born Asian woman to be President, but one wonders if that is really an achievement. She was not the first woman, nor the first ethnic minority, nor even the first female ethnic minority (by well over 30 years on both counts I think!). The whole UK-born thing was invented by the British press in a desperate attempt to make her sound groundbreaking when they were writing up a story on electoral malpractice, and does not really denote any kind of success in the face of a racist establishment, despite the best attempts of some of her friends to paint it that way.

  • Delete. If this article is deemed encyclopedic, by that logic I might as well make an article for some of my friends at Texas A&M who have accomplished similar things. 24.1.97.100 04:39, 29 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. University students are very rarely notable no matter how prestigious the institution. Winning an election in a student organization certainly is not notable in the vast majority of cases, including this one. Indrian 05:54, Dec 29, 2004 (UTC)
