New section: Vice-county systems[edit]

I have added a new section, which I've called "Vice-county systems" – this may not be the best title, so alternatives are welcome.

This attempts to describe, in a fully referenced way, the highly confusing terminology which has been used in relation to vice-counties. I'm a little concerned that the inclusion of the Baroni Urbani & Collingwood (1976) usage may be WP:UNDUE, because I can't find any other source which has a total of 157 vice-counties (and their mis-spelling of the names of two of the Channel Islands in their list doesn't improve their reliability as a source). The overwhelming majority of sources use a total of either 153 or 152 VCs (in that order in my searches). If someone does know of another source for 157 VCs it would be good to know (not necessarily to add).

Should the treatment of the individual Channel Islands as separate islands be included in the article? Apart from the single reference given I've never heard of this - I'm pretty certain that botanically it's never done. Standard treatment is to group the islands and refer to them as 'CI', 'VCS' or 'VC113'. --Japonicus (talk) 13:37, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I suppose it illustrates the fact that for the Channel Islands at least, there doesn't seem to be a standard way of dealing with them as a vice-county. --HighKing (talk) 14:23, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As I noted above, the inclusion of the 157 VC system could tend towards WP:UNDUE, but I agree with HighKing that it does help to illustrate the very varied way in which the Channel Islands are dealt with. It emphasizes to the reader that whenever Britain or the British Isles are the area in question it's necessary to check how these islands are handled. If no-one can find any other source that treats each island as a separate VC, I suggest adding a note that this is an unusual approach. Peter coxhead (talk) 18:07, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As noted above, the article urgently needs a map showing all 152-153(157) VCs. Peter coxhead (talk) 15:45, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have been making enquiries re a copyright-free map. So far it seems that most if not all of those on the web do not have the permission of the copyright holder and so unfortunately would not be acceptable to Wikimedia Commons. A map for Ireland alone is all that is really needed, as we already have a map for Britain, and we can either put them together or have two images. Finally done based on OSM mapping. Fine details of the borders are inaccurate, but the basic maps are fine. For more details & or updates see [1] which aims to be a curated set of boundaries from OSM. Semudobia (talk) 11:25, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
