What does "running with scissors" mean?[edit]

Origin of Expression[edit]

I believe that the expression originates as the title of one of a number of public safety films aimed at children, produced in the 1950's or 1960's by a particular director or producer. These were shown in schools and were meant to show the hidden dangers of modern life. "Running With Scissors" was specifically a film, or a segment of a film, about the danger of running while carrying a pair of scissors. The gentleman who produced these films died some time in the 2000's decade and there was some publicity about him at the time. This is all I recall from hearing articles broadcast on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Radio One at some time in that decade.

It would seem that the phrase "Running with Scissors" was taken up by an author as a metaphor in their memoir; once published, a film followed, and now the Internet is awash with links to these modern, secondary uses of the phrase. In five minutes, I've been unable to find links to the original films and, as it's not a subject of particular interest to me, I'll let it lie there. I do find it interesting to note how EVEN THIS DISAMBIGUATION PAGE has, to date, no links to the original use of the expression or the film in which it was used. There would appear to be no Wikipedia article on them yet, or the person who built the disambiguation page was unaware of one.
