The naming of Allen County, Ohio[edit]

In the mid 1970s, Hellen Winemiller Wood conducted research that demonstrated convincingly that Allen County, Ohio was named after John Allen, soldier of the War of 1812 and not Ethan Allen as had been previously reported by some sources. Her conclusion was based on research of primary sources, accepted by local historians, and received press coverage in The Lima News. In 1976, she published her work in the book that I cited in the main article. Her research was compelling enough that the Ohio State legislature passed a resolution acknowledging her work and stated officially that the county was indeed named after John Allen. I will have to find a citation for the proclamation in my notes. However, I would appreciate it if you do not revert my change without first consulting Mrs. Wood's book that I cited. Simply citing another Wikipedia article does not trump a citation of research based on primary sources. Steve Baskauf 03:16, 12 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not interested in getting involved in a reversion war of some kind, so I'm going to let this sit pending additional documentation. However, you are making a mistake in perpetuating information that has been shown to be incorrect. Date established[edit]

I have conflicting sources on when Allen County was established. The one cited here says March 1, 1820. History of Allen County, Ohio Containing a History of the County, Etc., Etc ... by M A Leeson says April 1, 1820 on page 123, and the Allen County Engineer's page says February 12, 1820 along with the OHS. I'm sure that the problem is that one date is when the state legislature ordered the creation of the county, but that the other is when the county government was actually established. There's no conflict between the two. Nyttend (talk) 23:18, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I do have a very large watchlist (over 12,000 articles, most of them being counties or small communities), but as you see it doesn't always help me read what others post: I didn't observe that you gave sources for three dates! There's no doubt that the March date is that of the law that ordered the creation, and as it's from a state government website, I have no doubts about its reliability, unless the April pages (which I don't have time to check) give the actual law itself. Moreover, see the History section: according to its referenced statement, the county's first governmental meeting (i.e. organization) wasn't done until 1831.
