Alternative definition[edit]

The alternative definition seems strange to me. It's sort of like saying "A pointing device is any object that points at something." What was the intent behind the added sentence? -- hike395 15:15, 11 Aug 2003 (UTC)

It is odd to suggest that any pointer device is related to computers, if that is not the case. - Patrick 21:06, 11 Aug 2003 (UTC)
I see your point. It's a good one. It can be solved by adding "In computer science, " to the beginning of the article. My concern with the extra sentence is the policy that Wikipedia:Wikipedia is not a dictionary. A sentence that says that pointing devices are generic devices that point is pretty dictionary-like. Can anything more be said about it (Do pointing devices cause global warming? :-) ) If not, I would recommend removal.
A dictionary entry would just say that it is a device that points, more encyclopedic is mentioning existing kinds, as it does. - Patrick 06:42, 13 Aug 2003 (UTC)

That 3D pointing device section looks like an ad for PhaseSpace products. 67.84.146.125 19:23, 30 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Second picture[edit]

Someone who knows what that is needs to add a caption. Otherwise I'll just put one in that says "What." --212.2.171.132 00:11, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

classification of touchpad[edit]

In my opinion, touchpad should be categorized in "Based on motion of an object". Because it is more like a mouse than a touchscreen. They are both based on motion of an object. The only difference is one is mouse, the other is finger. Actually you can't operate a touchpad just by touching without moving. -- Benwu232 (talk) 03:33, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Outline[edit]

The outline was changed in favor of a better overview. This design was arbitrary and there are other reasonable alternatives. If someone has other suggestions or ideas, feel free to change the outline again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by DanielSc (talkcontribs) 11:45, 28 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
