Yotsuba & Da Vinci[edit]

Literary magazine Da Vinci has a special feature on Yotsuba&! in this month's issue, including an interview with Azuma-sensei (a pretty rare occurrence, I believe). ADV Website dead[edit]

Our link to ADV's Yotsuba&! page is dead. In fact, as far as I can tell, they've removed all manga information, period, though they still have sidebar links as if it's there. Unless, maybe, their website is merely borked and/or my search fu is weak like a weak thing. This wouldn't be much of a problem, but we also use that site as a reference -- which is now dead. Non-English publishers[edit]

You are aware that all know (or so) non-English have now references in the List of Yotsuba&! chapters. We have to move those refs in here however i don't know how to put them. Yeah -- currently the Manga section isn't really following the guidelines of WP:SS. Part of this is because of edits made to the chapter list when it went through FAC, which weren't mirrored back here. My suggestion is that we copy over the Lead from the chapter list then edit it down to remove things that aren't needed (such as statements that provide context). —Quasirandom (talk) 19:56, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a well written article, which appears to thoroughly cover the subject. I found one deadlink (ref #57 - [1]) , which is unfortunately not available at the Internet Archive Wayback machine, but I assume good faith and the reference does contain a quote. There are four images, correctly tagged with non-free use rationales. No more are needed, I think. All the references that I have been able to check support the statements and appear to be [[WP:RS[]] in context, written by people who appear to be regularly cited cources.

I am intrigued by the name Yotsuba&! and why the ampersand and excalamation mark are used, but that is not relevant to this assessment. I am happy to confirm GA status. Jezhotwells (talk) 18:34, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up on the dead link -- Anime on DVD moved to Mania.com a couple years ago, and it looks like the forwarding no longer works. The new url is http://www.mania.com/yotsuba-vol-01_article_82171.html -- I'll replace it in the article.

Pity indeed. The thumbnail on the Idea page on the left of the first row is (on the left) a two-page spread from volume 5 and (right) the cover designs (with wraparounds) of the eight volumes. From what i undestand IDEA is a magazine focused on design that issue is the first one manga & light novel cover/packaging design & art. Yotsuba&! was the case study showing a gallery on the whole franchise including non Japanese edition covers as mentioned in its French publisher blog but also advertisement & others support materials released. Yen edition changes[edit]

One significant one: Fuka has been changed to Fuuka. Since guidelines say that, if there's multiple versions of names in English, use the "best-known" one, and this edition is only just out (mine arrived from Amazon today), I think we should hold off on changing this in the article. The problem with that is, per WP:ENGLISH, we have to use a spelling of (one of) the official English edition(s) -- specifically, the best-known English spelling. And Fūka is never used by either ADV or Yen, only Fuka and Fuuka, respectively. —Quasirandom (talk) 14:08, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do we have a fluent Japanese speaker in the house?[edit]

From the committee interview of Azuma on winning the Japan Media Arts Award:

Q5: 作品をつくるうえで最も苦労する部分、またはこだわる部分はどこですか？
A5: 一番苦労するのはネーム（セリフ）。やりたくないくらいです。こだわるのは、説明しやすいところでは画面のつくり方でしょうか。記号と写実のバランスとか。人物と背景が乖離（かいり）していなくて、キャラクターが「そこにいる」感じをどう描くか。漫画になりすぎないように描く感じといいますか。

Based on the English transcript, this looks potentially useful as Development info, but the official translation is slightly garbled. Can anyone come up with a fluid translation, to confirm this? A slightly more fluent translation:

Q5: Please tell us the most difficult or considerable part when you create your work.
A5: What I struggle with the most is the "name," [TN: manga jargon for first draft, equivalent to a storyboard ], that is, creating the story or dialog. It’s so hard that I don’t even want to do it. What I care about, to give an example that is easy for me to explain, is how to design a picture, so that there is a balance between symbols [TN: not sure about that word] and realism. How to depict the touch [TN: ??] of a character being "really there," where the character and the background do not lose contact with each other. What I would hope for is that it (the picture) does not become too cartoony.

SupaPhly, just so you know, generally articles keep whatever cover it was first given unless there's a substantive reason (like crappy image quality, or it wasn't the first volume) to change it. This is mainly to avoid edit-warring (especially between those who want a Japanese cover, because it's a Japanese comic, and those who want an English cover, because it's the English Wikipedia). —Quasirandom (talk) 14:56, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Possible New Section for the Article[edit]

Fuka versus Fuuka[edit]

Given the Yen editions are way outselling the ADV ones, at least for new volumes, a reasonable argument can be made that Fuuka is becoming the more commonly recognized romanization of Miss Wind-Scent's name. Thus some of the recent changes to the article. Time to change the mentions to Fuuka (with a mention of Fuka as alternate spelling in her character description)? The demographics we list on Wikipedia comes from the intended audience of the magazine the manga is first published in.
