Khotan is an interesting anomoly. There appears to have been a strong indo-european influence with connections to iron age europe. This probably happened with the original migration off of the steepe above the black sea. While some of the tribes went west into Europe, some of the tribe migrated east and settled around the Taklamakan desert. The culture appears to have been wiped out around 400 ad by the Han empire.
- Khotan Kingdom and its culture was wiped out by the Islamic Turkish conquest during the 10th century AD, or about a 100o years after the fall of the Han Empire, sp rather long after Han and Later Han Empire were just a glimpse in the Chinese history books... eg. Boris Marshak in his opus magnum Peerless Images discussed a little the Khotanese Buddhist art, here in the context of spotted horse image that later, from 10th century onward was promulgated through out the entire Turkish conquests area in Central and Western Asia.DarioTW 18:50, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Should the new blockquote be removed?[edit]
The new blockquote inserted by User Rajamaan about Chinese officials taking temporary local wivess is perhaps of some interest but I feel it may very biased and, possibly, inaccurate (present-day Uighurs, in general, are very dissapproving of relationships between non-Muslims and Uighur women). It is possibly more reflective of 19th century British prejudices than fact. Moreover, it may well be considered offensive. Also, I am not sure that these observations are of enough historical note to be worthy of quoting on a one page encyclopedia article on Hotan. I think they should probably be removed. - Temporary marriage among Uyghur women in Qing era Xinjiang has been written about and studied by modern day scholars like Ildiko Beller-Hann. Linda Benson wrote about it in lslamic Marriage and Divorce in Xinjiang: The Case of Kashgar and Khotan. Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, who was not British, commented about the women available for temporary marriage in Khotan. Just because a religion forbids something does not mean it does not happen among its followers or that present day Uyghurs follow the same habits as people in the 19th century did. 19th century people in the Tarim Basin did not even call themselves Uyghur and never heard of the name before while modern day Uyghurs use that name. Using this logic, we should not write about Alcohol in Iran because Islam forbids Muslims to drink alcohol or Prostitution in Uzbekistan because Muslims are supposed to disapprove of it.Rajmaan (talk) 01:11, 21 October 2015 (UTC)
- I take your point, Rajmaan. However, perhaps this subject deserves special treatment such as in the articles Alcohol in Iran and Prostitution in Uzbekistan??? I still think it is probably inappropriate to have such a long and detailed entry about it on a one page general article about Hotan/Khotan. I think this could perhaps be developed into a really interesting article. Does this make sense to you? Would you be willing to create such a page? - If you don't like the wording that I added, please feel free to change it around. My personal goal is to combine Tianshannet (a page I recently created), Radio Free Asia, Global Times, the UAA and the whole lot into a comprehensive picture of Xinjiang. What the English speaking world needs most is some kind of purchase on "what is Xinjiang", because right now, Wikipedia offers them very sparse detail on the subject. It's a tricky subject of course, but I don't want to ignore anyone, including Chinese state media and government sources as well as separatists or dissenters. Buzhage county=布扎克乡?[edit]
Xinjiang residents debunk CNN report of 'cemetery demolition' "The Global Times reporters also found the place where these graves were relocated - a public cemetery in Buzhage county. The facility of the cemetery is still a work in progress and it is about 10 to 15 minutes of driving from the downtown area." Based on my knowledge of the shifting sands of Chinese character naming changes in southern Xinjiang, I preliminary guess that the location actually referred to is Buzaq (Buzhake; بۇزاق يېزىسى / 布扎克乡) in Hotan County.
