Steve Coogan Irish?[edit]

Steve Coogan Father and Mother are Irish--11113 o7 (talk) 19:35, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

His mother is Irish; his father is English with Irish parents.
Whether this makes a person Irish or not is, I suppose, up for debate; but I have noticed Irish people are sometimes incredibly precious about 'claiming' certain celebrities when the celebrity in question has not commented on it.
Find evidence of him calling himself Irish and you could possibly change it. But not everyone with Irish family considers themselves so. Alooulla (talk) 18:46, 19 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He completed his application for Irish citizenship last year. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:21, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
He's renounced his British citizenship and become an Irish citizen. It's not a great look for Wikipedia to be misidentifying Irish people as English. He doesn't refer to himself as English. DanielTokenhouse (talk) 15:02, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If he's renounced his British citizenship, the article should certainly mention that. Do you have some source(s)? But I'm not sure if "renouncing" UK citizenship has any legal basis. Until two years ago, he was wholly British, wasn't he, i.e. for most of his life so far? Martinevans123 (talk) 15:07, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The process for renouncing British citizenship is here - https://www.gov.uk/renounce-british-nationality. The article states that he considers himself Irish. DanielTokenhouse (talk) 15:08, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The source you've added says: "Coogan, who was born and raised in Manchester in the UK, describes himself as "half-Irish;" his mother Kathleen grew up in Co Mayo and his paternal grandparents are from Co Kilkenny and Co Cork and emigrated to Manchester after World War I"? Martinevans123 (talk) 15:10, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What's the other half? None of it says "English-Irish". I see no evidence that he considers himself half-English. DanielTokenhouse (talk) 15:19, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, what is the other half? Thanks for the gov.uk link, but am struggling to find the word "renounced" in that IrishCentral source... Martinevans123 (talk) 15:38, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In fact, searching the internet, I am struggling to find any suggestion at all that he has "renounced his British citizenship". I would have thought that would have been quite newsworthy, over the course of the past two years. Almost a radical political statement? Martinevans123 (talk) 15:51, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And the main body of the article doesn't yet support the claims in the lead section and infobox that he is only Irish? It just says: "In March 2023 Coogan completed the process of applying for Irish citizenship." Does getting Irish citizenship also automatically cancel British citizenship? I think not. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 15:55, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, having British citizenship does not mean one describes oneself, or are described as, English, or half-English. There's no citation to suggest he identifies as such. The only verifiable material we have is that his citizenship is Irish. We don't have anything saying he identifies with any nationality or ethnicity except Irish. It's not very encyclopaedic to say a subject is "half" something. DanielTokenhouse (talk) 15:58, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see. I don't know if he has ever described himself as English. I guess it's quite possible. Do you have one where he says "I am Irish, not English"? I suspect that there might be a quite a few WP:RS sources that describe him as British. But you're saying he's definitely renounced his British citizenship (not just that his UK passport has expired)? I guess that need not be public knowledge? Martinevans123 (talk) 16:04, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I guess we could leave it out altogether. DanielTokenhouse (talk) 16:15, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's a bit radical. Unless we have strong WP:RS sources that state he has renounced his British citizenship, I'm not sure why we can assume he has lost it. Most people born in Manchester are British, and are regarded as English? If he has said "I am no longer British/ English", we'd need the sources for that? Martinevans123 (talk) 16:20, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps you are a personal friend and he has told you this privately? But Wikipedia needs public domain published sources to support any claims. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:34, 24 April 2024 (UTC) p.s. by the way, The Guardian here, in 2020, said "Steve Coogan is an English comedian, actor, writer and producer."[reply]
Do we have a source that suggests Coogan considers himself English? His work (such as Alan Partridge) mocks English people relentlessly and I don’t think he has a great deal of time for Englishness or Britishness. Not quite Anglophobic but close. DanielTokenhouse (talk) 21:19, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As with many comedians, I would have thought that Coogan's own Englishness was a deeply rooted and essential part of his satire. Similarly with his Paul and Pauline Calf. Just my view. But I'll certainly look, as you don't seem too keen. I just think "Irish" on it's own is somehow a little misleading. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:38, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm very surprised to see you've now also made this change. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:41, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I say, we should avoid describing Irish people as English. It is offensive. DanielTokenhouse (talk) 21:57, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You said "He's renounced his British citizenship and become an Irish citizen" I think we can agree on the second claim (although you have now changed "Citizenship" to "Nationality" in the infobox?) But do you have even a single source to support your first claim? Some people might also see an unjustified removal of nationality as offensive. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:24, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
p.s. Miriam Margolyes is also on my watchlist. You said there that she had also "renounced her British citizenship"?? Martinevans123 (talk) 09:52, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
p.p.s Oh and I now see that Andy Farrell has now also suddenly become Irish?? Martinevans123 (talk) 10:34, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You need to be careful. Irish people regard being described as English remarkably offensive. He's stated he's Irish in the piece, he's moved to Ireland, and he coaches Ireland. There is a multitude of evidence he regards himself as Irish, none that he considers himself English. DanielTokenhouse (talk) 10:50, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Should I open a thread at Talk:Andy Farrell? Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 11:02, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see you have now opened a thread there. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:33, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I trust you can see that the article says: "Vanity Fair called him a British national treasure"? Martinevans123 (talk) 10:39, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
