His mother is Irish; his father is English with Irish parents.
Whether this makes a person Irish or not is, I suppose, up for debate; but I have noticed Irish people are sometimes incredibly precious about 'claiming' certain celebrities when the celebrity in question has not commented on it.

He's renounced his British citizenship and become an Irish citizen. It's not a great look for Wikipedia to be misidentifying Irish people as English. He doesn't refer to himself as English. DanielTokenhouse (talk) 15:02, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If he's renounced his British citizenship, the article should certainly mention that. Do you have some source(s)? But I'm not sure if "renouncing" UK citizenship has any legal basis. In fact, searching the internet, I am struggling to find any suggestion at all that he has "renounced his British citizenship". And the main body of the article doesn't yet support the claims in the lead section and infobox that he is only Irish? It just says: "In March 2023 Coogan completed the process of applying for Irish citizenship." Does getting Irish citizenship also automatically cancel British citizenship? I think not. Thanks. Well, having British citizenship does not mean one describes oneself, or are described as, English, or half-English. There's no citation to suggest he identifies as such. The only verifiable material we have is that his citizenship is Irish. We don't have anything saying he identifies with any nationality or ethnicity except Irish. Oh, I see. I don't know if he has ever described himself as English. I guess it's quite possible. Do you have one where he says "I am Irish, not English"? I suspect that there might be a quite a few WP:RS sources that describe him as British. But you're saying he's definitely renounced his British citizenship (not just that his UK passport has expired)? I guess that need not be public knowledge? That's a bit radical. Unless we have strong WP:RS sources that state he has renounced his British citizenship, I'm not sure why we can assume he has lost it. Most people born in Manchester are British, and are regarded as English? If he has said "I am no longer British/ English", we'd need the sources for that? Perhaps you are a personal friend and he has told you this privately? But Wikipedia needs public domain published sources to support any claims. Do we have a source that suggests Coogan considers himself English? His work (such as Alan Partridge) mocks English people relentlessly and I don’t think he has a great deal of time for Englishness or Britishness. Not quite Anglophobic but close. As with many comedians, I would have thought that Coogan's own Englishness was a deeply rooted and essential part of his satire. Similarly with his Paul and Pauline Calf. Just my view. You said "He's renounced his British citizenship and become an Irish citizen" I think we can agree on the second claim (although you have now changed "Citizenship" to "Nationality" in the infobox?) But do you have even a single source to support your first claim? Some people might also see an unjustified removal of nationality as offensive. You need to be careful. Irish people regard being described as English remarkably offensive. He's stated he's Irish in the piece, he's moved to Ireland, and he coaches Ireland.
