RC Patrol - Keeping a lookout for vandalism. Cleanup - Help make unreadable articles readable. Requests - Wanted on WP, but hasn't been created. Merge - Combining duplicate articles into one. Wikiprojects - So many to join, so many to choose from...Take your pick!

The Singapore Scout Association

What are the sources for your section on the Singapore Scout Logo? It looks very much like a direct copy from an official document and thus a copyright violation. I have moved it to Talk:The Singapore Scout Association until it is clear that it is not. --Bduke 11:02, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Indeed I took the info from a book by the Singapore Scout Association. I'm sorry for the lack of citation and I'll be grateful if you can enlighten me how to do it. I'm still quite a newbie in the editing, so please pardon me. Thanks. -- Skyfoo 06:47, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

OK, the first thing is that you are not allowed to copy something from a book by the Singapore Scout Association. They hold the copyright to this material. When you write something, you technically hold the copyright but you have to release it to an appropriate open source license. So, in order to get this material into the article you have to understand it and then write it in your own words. I recommend that in doing so, you make it much shorter and rather simpler. Why not have a go at on the talk page and other editors can look at it and help you before it is moved to the main article. Of course you have to cite the source of the material. I'm actually do not agree in rephrasing the whole thing as it could distort the meanings, and that is not desired. Since the given words are sort of the official meanings behind the logo, I do not believe that we should edit it in any way. How about this, I'll write to the Singapore Scout Association for permission to use its materials for post, until then, let's just do it your way. -- Skyfoo 08:17, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not an expert on copyright issues, but I do not think getting their permission is sufficient. The whole thing has to be moved to a completely open source license. I doubt they will agree to it and I doubt that you (or I) could word the request to them in the correct legal way. Wikipedia is open source, like open source software. No harm trying anyway. I don't think there will be any problems from Singapore Scout Association, as after all, it will increase the profile of the association at the end of the day. There may well be harm trying. If you ask them in the wrong way and they reply that it is OK to use the material, yet it is not, they might resent being asked again with the proper wording. Remember they will be giving up all rights to the material, not just giving you permission to to use it in this one article. You need to seek advice from a WP administrator with expertise on copyright issues. Also please remember that we are not in the business of increasing the profile of the association but rather in writing an encyclopedia from a neutral point of view. I strongly recommend that you rewrite the material in a briefer way. If I have time, I may have a go myself on the talk pages. --Bduke 21:09, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
