Good question, actually - there's constant debate on various talk and policy pages about where exactly to draw a line for inclusion/deletion. I tend to agree that the Wing Commander articles have grown to be quite good an informative (even though it's a topic that doesn't interest me all that much), and in hindsight, my tagging your first article for deletion was probably a bit premature - sorry for that, and good to see you decided to stick around nonetheless :) For the record, I view myself as neither a deletionist nor an inclusionist but try to judge each article on its own merit - I don't think Wikipedia should be filled up indiscriminately with articles on anything and everything, but I agree that we can have a lot more leeway that traditional paper encyclopedias. -- Ferkelparade π 15:05, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for getting a user name. They are definitely useful around VfD, to quote the top of the page: "Your opinion will be given the most weight if you are logged in with an account that already existed when the nomination was made...". RE Lee Deville vfd

Thanks for taking the time to let me know that you relisted the Deville article on VfD. I'm keeping out of it, because I feel like I've done my duty--I rescued it, put in a stub, then rescued that stub, and I'm still not sure myself whether the guy is really notable. I have real problems with the "average professor test" and the fact that minor characters in video games seem to be allowed but professors aren't, but I don't think Deville is the guy to fight it on. Also, as I wrote in my comment in the original VfD, I don't know anything about academic mathematics and I have no idea whatsoever whether this guy is notable. (Although, to be frank, I doubt that the other people voting on VfD know that much ore about math than I do.) Anyway, thanks for letting me know. Remes 19:08, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Chess

Hi there! Following your VfD nominations on chess, I spent some time browsing chess pages. My chess is a bit rusty (I'm more into other games) but I like its presence here as a field of knowledge not commonly found so broadly in 'pedias.

Anyway. I ran into Fool's mate and noticed something that seemed to be missing, and I thought maybe you could tell me if I simply didn't find it, or my naming is wrong, or something. Fool's mate is known in Dutch as 'gekkenmat' (crazy mate) because it basically only works if your opponent cooperates. However, equally well-known here is 'herdersmat' (shepherd's mate) which is a four-move mate which only requires that your opponent isn't paying attention; I've seen it happen several times in school chess tourneys.

White moves E2-E4, F1-C4, D1-H5 then mates with C4-E7 or H5-E7. What black does isn't really relevant as long as it doesn't interfere with the pattern. Radiant_* 11:27, Mar 23, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your great work on chess related articles. It's all great, and I especially like your work on Larsen's Opening. We could probably include the game score to Spassky's (in)famous demolition of Larsen in the 1970 USSR vs World game in the article. (I enjoy miniatures.) In general I think more chess articles could use complete game scores. Normally not for the openings, but most of the notable chess players should be given an example of their best play. I think the Anatoly Karpov article is a great example of a nicely chosen game. Quale 05:32, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Wikipedia:WikiProject Chess

Cities without busses

On Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Bronx Bus Routes I had made the comment "my city has bus routes too, as does every town and city; definitely not encyclopaedic" and you responded "Not every city has busses unfortunately..."

I appreciate your point but just out of curiosity I could not think of a city that did not have a bus system - did you have a city in mind? Regards --AYArktos 10:46, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

hmmm you nominated Bozeman, Montana. It in fact does have a bus system Bobcat Transit - "An ASMSU sponsored bus system available to anyone". And dial-a-bus I would still say is a bus system. I am not trying to be provocative but I think it would be a real challenge to think of a city entirely public transport deprived - sometimes the networks may be extremely limited but ... I am not sure this debate will get us anywhere though. I was just curious if there were any examples which would result in a paradigm shift for myself. I am not sure the example of Bozeman did - a small city where the only bus service is associated with the university still has a bus system if that service can be used by anyone. That's a fair reading of the situation, but is the "No potential for becoming encyclopedic" clause (which was not cited, rather POV was) overly-broad? How can that apply to an article which can be renamed and rewritten for NPOV? If the issue is scope, then I'll challenge you to justify how VFD is the appropriate place for discussion. attempted discussion

You told me discuss things on the discussion page instead of in the "Benedict" article. That was my intenttion. I for one think the "slave labour clause" is irrelevant to this article and removed it repeatedly, but others reverted that again and again. I added the *** just to draw their attention towards the discussion page. No offense Str1977

Frogs and such
