Auburn Incident[edit]

Key phrase: "at the moment". See WP:NOTNEWS and WP:Notability (events)#People notable for only one event. There is extensive information about the incident in the football article, but it does not make this man a notable resident of Dadeville. The link you provided states this: "People known only in connection with one event should generally not have an article written about them. If the event is notable, then an article usually should be written about the event instead." This is not an article about "Al", it is a mention of him in an article of where he is from. "Al" will not be forgotten because a historic landmark is being destroyed. Toomer's Corner is Auburn's little version of New York's Times Square. If someone from Yonkers destroyed Times Square would it not be important to mention them in the article on Yonkers? It's a long-reaching effect, therefore it is not "temporary". See WP:CRIME: "The motivation for the crime or the execution of the crime is unusual—or has otherwise been considered noteworthy—such that it is a well-documented historic event. Generally, historic significance is indicated by sustained coverage of the event in reliable secondary sources which persists beyond contemporaneous news coverage and devotes significant attention to the individual's role." Beyond the extensive news coverage from numerous sources, entire groups have risen in opposition to his actions ("Tide for Toomer's" on Facebook has tens of thousands of members and has raised over $30,000 as of the writing of this post), which should be enough to mention him in the article on where he is from.--BeaverYabor (talk) 19:05, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The event has some notability, mainly as one incident in the history of one landmark associated with Auburn University. Updyke himself has no claim to notability (though, assuredly, a brief claim to notoriety).
