Welcome![edit]

Hi Pixel23, and a warm welcome to Wikipedia! I hope you have enjoyed editing as much as I did so far and decide to stay. Unfamiliar with the features and workings of Wikipedia? Don't fret! Be Bold! Here's some good links for your reference and that'll get you started in no time!

Most Wikipedians would prefer to just work on articles of their own interest. But if you have some free time to spare, here are some open tasks that you may want to help out :

  • RC Patrol - Keeping a lookout for vandalism.
  • Cleanup - Help make unreadable articles readable.
  • Requests - Wanted on WP, but hasn't been created.
  • Merge - Combining duplicate articles into one.
  • Wikiprojects - So many to join, so many to choose from...Take your pick!

Oh yes, don't forget to sign when you write on talk pages, simply type four tildes, like this: ~~~~. This will automatically add your name and the time after your comments. And finally, if you have any questions or doubts, don't hesitate to contact me on my talk page. Once again, welcome! =)

Beautiful picture of Joshua Tree[edit]

I just want to let you know that that is a beautiful picture of Joshua Tree over here. If you get a change, could you please let us know what license this picture is released under. The GFDL is a good choice, as is the Creative Commons. If you took this picture, and wish to release it under the GFDL, for example, just go to this page, click on "edit this page", then replace {{unknown}} with {{GFDL}}. If you would prefer to release this picture under another license, look at this list of copyright tags for a license to release the photo under.

Again, thank you for contributing this beautiful picture to the Wikipedia. Samboy 08:57, 27 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Great whale pic[edit]

That tail-slap pic you uploaded is excellent - thanks for uploading. Did you take it yourself? If so I am extremely envious of you being able to go whale-watching in Hawaii! Pcb21| Pete 07:40, 17 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pixel23, there's a mistake in this image. The note you marked as "1/5 Yuan" is actually 1/2 Yuan. The "5" refers to 5 Jiao, where each Jiao is equal to 0.1 Yuan. -- ran (talk) 01:11, 7 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Fremont bridge troll, seattle, washington, usa.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Thank you. Stan 05:35, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Skull and bones.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{GFDL-self}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Eagle Medal[edit]

Re the Eagle Scout medal you uploaded belonging to Jim Harper (I assume that's you or you know him). We're trying to add images of every type Eagle medal and would like to know if you can tell us the type (many are similar), the year it was awarded, and/or a photo of the back side. See the Eagle Scout article we are working on a lot lately. Rlevse 21:19, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures[edit]

Hi. Thanks for all the pictures you've been uploading, however I have suggestions. One is that for high-res pictures, it would be great if you could take advantage of Wikimedia Commons, the preferred place for uploads from now on. Anything there can then be linked to any of the Wikimedia Foundation projects, like Wiktionary and Wikinews, in the same way we do now. Liscencing works the same way as it does here. Also, it frees the wikipedia servers for text and gives pictures a central home. Next, you state that the pictures were taken by Jim Harper, however, unless you ascertain that you are Jim Harper or prove that you have permission from him, most of your pictures will be considered copyright violations and tagged and removed as such. More information on their origins would eliminate this problem. Also, you may consider moving the ones currently on Wikipedia to Commons. Thank you, pschemp | talk 00:50, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removed a huge amount of license tag questions. I've updated the license on all the Joshua Tree images, and will work on others over the wknd. I've also added a line to my user page acknowledging that I, Pixel23, am indeed Jim Harper in real life, and that I do have the right to assign a CC-SA license to the images I've taken and which I've uploaded to WP.Pixel23 20:40, 8 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:Joshua_tree_Lost_horse_mine1.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the source and creator of the image on the image's description page, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided source information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Images, an applogy, etc.[edit]

I am sorry to hear about the hideous misunderstanding that you got caught up in, with regards to the (excellent) images of Joshua Tree National Park you uploaded. In partial explanation, I can only say that Wikipedia gets litterally hundreds of illgal images uploaded every day, and so those of us working on sorting them work pretty quickly, and try to clean them up before we get swamped by the next day's pile. This leads to mistakes, such as the one that happened to you. It does not mean we don't appreciate the images, or that we don't value your effort in contributing them. We do - particularly because of how many bad images we have to deal with! As long as the images have a clear license and source statement (which they now do), they will not be deleted, orphaned or not. I hope you would reconsider asking for them to be removed, and please let me know if there's anything further I can do to help. JesseW, the juggling janitor 18:41, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

I just read over the discussion at pschemp's talk page -- it looks like two different issues got mixed up together. 1) The authorship confusion - we didn't know that Jim Harper, the listed author, was the same as Pixel23, the listed uploader. This is now entirely cleared up, although there is still some cleanup to do (which I will do). 2) Where the images should be put - First of all - we want the images, make no doubt of that. The only question is weather they would be better directly inline in the Joshua Tree article, or in a gallery at the bottom of the Joshua Tree article, or on a seperate page at commons.wikimedia.org. This is not something you, Pixel23, need to worry about. You are welcome to learn about Wikipedia customs in this, and help out if you like, but, if you simply want to contribute images, that is entirely OK - more than OK, it's great! Pschamp combined these two issues into one edit(removing the images from the Joshua Tree article), probably just for speed reasons. It did not mean that she, or anyone, didn't want the images. We did, and we do. Hope this clarifies things, and sorry again for the misunderstandings and trouble. JesseW, the juggling janitor 18:54, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Fremont Bridge Image suggestion[edit]

You might care to crop this image to remove the redhead on the left. At first glance he appears to be relieving himself. While I'm sure this is not the case, it does make for an odd picture. 72.75.17.31 11:33, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Air arabia.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Air arabia.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. When you use a generic fair use tag such as {{fair use}} or {{fair use in|article name}}, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Orphaned fair use image (Image:Air arabia.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Air arabia.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Time_lapse_series_n_camden_.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Replaceable fair use Image:Lufthansa,_May_2005_copy.jpg[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Lufthansa,_May_2005_copy.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 21:18, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Skull and bones.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Skull and bones.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Baseball cropped.jpg}[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Baseball cropped.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check:

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's escription page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. File source problem with File:Yuan collection.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Yuan collection.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:34, 1 December 2009 (UTC).
