Lido di Ostia

Lido di Ostia is some distance from the Roman town of Ostia (Ostia Antica) as the seashore has receded in the last 2,000 years. The article seems to indicate that the modern and ancient Ostias are the same place. (unsigned, but by User: Exile, 20 Jan 2005)

There are three places, not two, all some distance apart, and with very distinct histories: Ostia Antica (the large Roman city), Ostia (the mostly medieval village next to it, a sleepy place inhabited largely by airline stewards who find it convenient to the airport, although with a nice castle and the church where S. Monica was buried for over a thousand years before they moved her), and Lido di Ostia, a modern development which we owe to the recent fetish for ocean-bathing, and now somewhat notorious for its gay beach. What do you mean? Do you intend to write a separate article for Ostia? I too think there ought to be one, rather than the redirect, but just don't have the time to write it... Bill 13:03, 27 October 2005 (UTC)

• That's indeed true. There's Lido di Ostia, the modern city. And there's Ostia Antica, the old Roman harbourtown. First one's now an actual city, second one is today just a tourist attraction and an archeological site -- SoothingR 08:24, 28 October 2005 (UTC)

Cleanup

This is an interesting article, but some of it reads really weirdly; I suspect that it was either written or translated by someone with basic-to-intermediate command of English. Any objections to the cleanup tag? I'll take a crack at it as soon as my time permits. Dppowell 19:49, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

I cleaned up general grammatical/structural issues, and I'll be willing to put in a bit more work on content, etc. when I have a bit more time to dedicate to the process. One thing: all of the parenthetical details are really irritating and make the page look terrible. I was trying to incoporate some of them into the text of the article, but if anyone else is interested in helping out with this, it would definitely be appreciated.
