def. not the 18th highest in cali. Aggesiz (sp) in the palisades i know is the 20th highest in CA at well over 13800. there are 13 14ers in CA and numerous peaks in the very high 13000s.

Um, ropes? Having climbed both Dana and Lyell, I can assert that neither require ropes, though crampons and an axe on Lyell may be useful. So while Dana doesn't require ropes, it's not unique in this aspect, and Lyell is the higher peak.

Mt. Lyell does not require ropes. We've climbed it with just an ice axe. Asserting that Mt. Dana is the highest in Yosemite that does not require ropes is incorrect.

I also thought that Dana was named after Richard Henry Dana, first time I've heard otherwise.

Added a citation for name origin, feel free to verify hike395 04:10, 19 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Contested info moved to talk[edit]

  • Temperatures can drop very quickly, with hot 100 °F (38 °C){{dubious|date=July 2007}} weather dropping to freezing levels during a hailstorm.

First Ascent[edit]

I removed Josiah Whitney's name which was listed as one of the first to climb Dana. Roper says just Brewer and Hoffmann. Farquhar reports "Whitney spoke of it as an easy trip for tourists. (Whitney Survey: Geology, 1865, p. 435.)." I guess the most that can be said is that Brewer and Hoffmann made the first recorded ascent. --droll [chat] 02:14, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the date from 1864 to 1863. The names of the first ascenders are correct. Josiah Whitney climbed it with them the day following the first ascent. The source is Farquhar, Francis P., History of the Sierra Nevada, 1965, University of California Press, Berkeley, ISBN: 0-520-01551-7, page 131. I want to insert the citation but cannot figure out how to do that in a sidebar template. It seems I have to create the source first. If someone can change the source from Secor to the Farquhar, while leaving Secor as the source of the Easiest Route information, please go ahead.--Robertsturner52 (talk) 05:51, 11 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]
