The result of the debate was move to Messier 109. Joelito (talk) 15:55, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spiral Galaxy M109 → Messier 109 – a new rule has been issued for nameing galaxies (see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Astronomical objects/Archive 1#Naming Conventions). We can't put the type of galaxy in the name anymore. But making the artical M109 is out of the question. But Messier 109 is also used, it fills the artical title more then M109 could.

Survey[edit]

  • Support: This has been put on an agreement for all astronomer users. — HurricaneDevon @ 13:21, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: This seems to have the support of the Astronomical objects WikiProject. If the move goes ahead, make sure to alter the disambiguation page to point to the new article. Chaos syndrome 14:06, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

This seems to be affective on Messier 99 and Messier 108 artical. plus in the future, all messier objects may have their titles like this.

Title of article[edit]

I see this article has been moved a few times and articles linking to it now link to a variety of names. Can we reach consensus on the article name? Looking at most of the other Messier objects I think Spiral Galaxy M109 should be the name... without objections I will change it accordingly in a few days or so.--Kalsermar 18:14, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested name!?[edit]

I wanted to save this until it was put on the site, but I suggested a name for Messier 109. I feel like that guy that suggested the name for the Sombrero Galaxy (M104). I just wanted to tell because when it does go on the website, I want to put it in the artical. I'm not talking about changing the title to the new name, just put that this name was suggested for this galaxy in the artical. I think Hartmut Frommert will suggest my name to the IAU, so maybe someday it'll be the titel of this artical. I'm not going to revel the name I suggested unti it's on the site, so I don't get your hopes up. But this is the site [1]. — HurricaneDevon @ 00:45, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cool news, the Common Names for Messier Objects website has put my name on the Propositions for further names section. The name I've suggested was the Vacuum Cleaner Galaxy for a few reasons. The first it being a cyclonic looking galaxy, so I named it after a cyclonic vacuum cleaner. The second is... well... I like vacuum cleaners... go fig;). — HurricaneDevon @ 13:01, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Major edits on 21 July 2006[edit]

I'm just giving a heads up that i'm going to make this artical about Messier 109 beauteful. I plane to add information (not copyvios) that includes history, satellites, my suggested name and more. I also plane to change the artical title. But I assure you, these changes will make this artical as good as Andromeda's. — HurricaneDevon @ 13:01, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've finished my editing. Now it lookes like a well popular artical. Hope you like it. — HurricaneDevon @ 16:06, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I made some changes to your edits Devon, most importantly, I deleted the section about the suggested name. A suggestion of a name is hardly an acceptance of such in the scientific community, nor is it widely used by amateur astronomers, thus it has no place in an encyclopaedia where the use of "common names" should be taking place sparingly imho.--Kalsermar 19:08, 21 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, i'm to exited that my name was suggested that my brain can't work right. But I've put that info back in the artical, but I reworded it to say it's not official and for it not to be confused with a common name. But even if this dosn't thrill you and you remove it again, I won't put it back on. I thought people didn't mind and liked to have this info in the artical, like in the Surfboard Galaxy (i.e. Messier 108). — HurricaneDevon @ 00:14, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think these suggested names should go in articles. For one thing, they don't seem to be official in any way (it just seems like a list of names collected by one group, not an official suggestions list). In addition, being suggested names, they aren't actually in use. Seems like vanity. Chaos syndrome 01:10, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed Hurricane Devon's new picture, as it appears to have copyright issues. Mangojuicetalk 19:26, 23 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
