Origin of word[edit]

The article currently contains two conflicting claims about the origin of the word - Arabic versus Sanskrit. In an Indian context, this kind of linguistic dispute has strong religious and political implications, and should therefore be regarded as a potential POV minefield. --RichardVeryard 12:19, 17 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sarangi bows out[edit]

This section, while perhaps correct, is written like an opinion and has no citations. The rest of the article sounds very much like an un-cited opinion as well, and I've added a tag for further references; hopefully someone who knows more about the subject can provide some good sources. As you probably know, in most cases the Indian musical tradition is passed down by word of mouth. Still, I'm sure it is possible to find references for many of the assertions in the article. I'll do what I can. 140.177.205.221 (talk) 00:27, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, and I understand the difficulty in citing some things with rich oral histories but little written historical data. Unfortunately, in the context of an encyclopedia such citations are necessary. Thanks for your efforts. Jacotto (talk) 19:00, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've added some citations. There's still stuff in the History section with no citations, but I don't know where to find citations for that. 98.212.198.119 (talk) 04:13, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
