Lotsa junk added by a person who lives nearby and travels there every day. Not a rose garden.

Irrelevant points[edit]

"Car rental is also available at the airport. This is not recommended for visitors, since Budapest is famous for its poorly maintained roads, and is known as the pothole capital of Europe. (Potholes are called kátyú meaning craters in Hungarian). Vehicle theft is a serious problem."

This has nothing to do with Ferihegy airport, and furthermore it is not a reason to not rent a car from Ferihegy. Much of this information is completely irrelevant to the Ferihegy article. I am going to remove some of it, if no one objects.--Hungarian83 05:15, 2005 Apr 19 (UTC)

Improvements[edit]

With respect to the editors of the article, I kept a lot of the original text, but I greatly improved the article structure and format and deleted certain parts, since they were still POV, and not backed up with any evidence. In place of the deleted material, I tried to add some non-POV information. I also changed some sentence structure to help the article flow better, fixed spelling errors, improved some of the word choice (example: airline buff --> airline enthusiast), and reorganized some of the thoughts. Certain paragraphs had a stream of consciousness feel to them.

I can back up the information I added. According to MALÉV, the baggage shrink wrapping is still available, and according to the airport’s website, the airport minbus service uses Ford Transit vans. Regardless, I didn’t feel that make of the vehicle was important to the article.

Also, about the pothole information(!). The idea of the article is to inform people about Ferihegy, not scare them away from Hungary. I have driven all throughout Budapest, and much of Hungary. Yes, there are poorly maintained roads, but it’s not that bad (at least not any worse than anywhere else). By the way, the motorways are in excellent condition. Anyway, I don’t know how the article got from a civilian airport article to opinions on intracity road surface conditions, but I don’t believe it was appropriate.

The history section still leaves much to be desired, but I thought it would be at least a start. I hope the general consensus is that the article is improved, more informative, and better organized. --Hungarian83 07:27, 2005 Apr 21 (UTC)

However, foreigners are often cheated, and it is recommended that passengers call a reputable taxi company and wait, rather than taking a chance with a potentially problematic scammer.

to me the whole article sounds like coming from a marketing person from the bud airport itself. i believe a warning about the taxi situation is appropriate. as it stands now the visitor who reads wiki before coming here has no clue about it, he reads there are taxis, and expects nothing bad. the situation hasn't changed in years, the airport failed to do something against the scam. also, i would like to see a warning about CHECKED LUGGAGE theft. i had banalities stolen out of my checked luggage 3x in the last year at this airport. one was just a chocolate bar. by making the bad sides more public it gives the airport the chance to (finally) improve matters. --46.107.102.35 (talk) 11:19, 23 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Charters&Caspian Airlines[edit]

Improvment[edit]

AS far as I know the airport was operating pre-war. During WW2 it was a fighter base for the defence of the capital (both day and night fighters). It was overun by the Red Army in Dec 1944. Perhaps someone can verify these for contribution.

Secondly, unless anyone has any objections I will remove the charming reference about flying over the cemetery - a. who says its the largest?, b. Is it the only sight you will see? c. what has it got to do with the airport?

As for rough roads and dodgy taxi-drivers - it is no better or worse than any other capital city. Doesn't the new M0 motorway connect up with the airport yet?Sidney Bung (talk) 20:24, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article title?[edit]

Reading through bud.hu, it would appear that the airport is no longer referring to itself as the lengthy "Budapest Ferihegy International Airport" and has opted instead for the much simpler style "Budapest Airport".

Since it is presumably not our job as Wikipedians to dictate what we think the airport should be called, shouldn't we change the article title to reflect the airport's own description of itself? 80.217.142.132 (talk) 13:33, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The way I read it, "Budapest Airport Zrt" is the company set up to run the airport. The main airport has always been called Ferihegy, although you wouldn't believe it if you read http://www.bud.hu/english/about_us/history. Cpc464 (talk) 14:04, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ferihegy[edit]

All that was said so far is correct. The second paragraph of the article explains whose name ("Ferenc (Feri) Mayerffy") it refers to. When it was named, there probably really was a hill there, but as you correctly implied Feri is a diminuative of Ferenc (i.e. Frankie) and the place was probably jokingly named. Hungarian pronounciation[edit]

In the name Ferihegy the hegy is certainly not pronounced hedge, (Hungarians would write hedge as hedzs. For interest letter groups, like dzs have their separate place in the Hungarian alphabet, as if the English would include the th as a separate complex letter in theirs, and incidentally, the letter groups dz and dzs only earned a place in the Hungarian alphabet during the last two or three decades or so.

The function of the letter y in other comples letters is explained in the "References" of the article. In fact the intended softening purpose used with the consonants g, l, n, and t only truly applies to n and t, because gy sounds like a softened d and ly is softened to y like in York. Ferihegy suffers major embarrassment with security lapses[edit]

On 26th July 2010, the EU authorities revoced Budapest Ferihegy Airport's official "Schengen Clear" certification, due to serious lapses observed in personal security check procedures and unauthorised passing of banned objects.

Airport crew, flight crew, passengers all suffer the consequences. Some resolution is hoped for late autumn, early winter period if everything goes very much right.

Name[edit]

I know Liszt is known as Franz Liszt in English, but the official English name of the airport uses its Hungarian spelling "Ferenc". See the site of Hungary's national airline, the Hungarian news agency MTI, and Google hits of Liszt on the airport's official site.

The Hungarian Name is "Budapest Liszt Ferenc Nemzetközi Repülőtér" while the English version is "Budapest Franz Liszt International Aiport". Please don't change the Name. The Name of the Airport IS "Budapest Liszt Ferenc..." and nothing else. It's not like a word witch could be translated. Its also not like a Name of a man. The official Name is "Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport". Please moove the Article to this name. Within Hungary, and in most of the ex-pat community, the airport is almost universally known as Ferihegy or Budapest. The renaming is generally regarded as a piece of silly politics (even by Fidesz supporters).

But surely, when using the new name, we should be sensitive to the Hungarian language/culture and call it Liszt Ferenc Airport? History Timeline[edit]

At the beginning of the article the text stating changes in ownership should be listed in the Public to Private ownership section of the History section. Not in the general description of the article. I mean the following text:

"On 8 December 2005, a 75% stake in Ferihegy Airport was bought by BAA plc for 464.5 billion HUF (approx. 2.1 billion USD), including the right of operation for 75 years.[2] On 20 October 2006, BAA announced intentions to sell its stake in Budapest Airport to a consortium led by the German airports group, HOCHTIEF AirPort GmbH, subject to the consent of the Hungarian State. On 18 April 2007, the renovation of Terminal 1 at Ferihegy was awarded Europe’s most prestigious heritage preservation prize, the Europa Nostra award. The designers, contractors, builders and investors (the latter being BA) received the joint award of the European Commission and of the pan-European heritage preservation organisation Europa Nostra for the renovation of the protected monument spaces, the central hall, the gallery and the furniture at T1. On 6 June 2007, BAA and a consortium led by HOCHTIEF AirPort (HTA) formally closed and completed the transaction of the sale of BAA’s shares in Budapest Airport (BA) to the HOCHTIEF AirPort Consortium. Terminal 1 Closure[edit]

The article states in the Terminal 1 part that Wizz Air will move to Terminal 2B on the 1st of April, which did not happen. In the Airlines section the Terminal for Wizz air should remain Terminal 1 as it is yet unknown when that or any other airline will move from T1 to T2. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.131.227.176 (talk) 13:41, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To the best of my knowledge (as at June 2012), Terminal 1 is now closed and all flights have moved to T2 (although easyJet - with whom we are flying to Hungary in three weeks time - have yet to tell us about this!).

On a broader point - the collapse of Malév and the consequent reduction in traffic/passengers and closure of T1 has had quite an effect on this article and significant parts now no longer make sense and/or don't match the information given elsewhere in the article.
