British screenings[edit]

This series was never shown on British terrestrial television, only on satellite (the downmarket Sky network, owned by Rupert Murdoch). So, virtually no-one in the UK is familiar with it or Charles Shaughnessy, unsurprisingly perhaps as both it and he specialise in the kind of "stuffy, stiff upper-lip" stereotypes that only exist in American's minds. Are the British in the habit of watching television off the planet? underwater? Actually, this actor is pretty unknown in this country as well - this series was basically all about Fran Drescher and he was just a second banana (kind of like the British in general). Guest roles[edit]

Chester Drescher the dog is is listed in the credits for his role on the show according to http://akas.imdb.com/title/tt0106080/. He is listed as Chester 'Drescher'. Since his owner, Fran Drescher was the show's creator and executive producer it wasn't hard for her to have him listed in the credits. (Alphaboi867 03:59, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC))

Just because the IMDb entry lists his name doesn't mean it actually appeared in the credits broadcast at the end of each show. In any event, he did not appear on a regular basis and therefore would be listed under guest appearances if anywhere, but I still maintain mentioning him at all is superfluous. Rachel Chagall,Renee Taylor, and Ann Morgan Guilbert weren't credited cast members either. They were technically guest stars despite appearing in nearly every episode. (Alphaboi867 20:07, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC))

uh-oh[edit]

It's worth mentioning the Spanish - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396351/ - and Russian - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0442726/ - remakes. They use the same scripts and jokes, taken directly from the original series.

I think it's also worth mentioning that Fran Fine had a sister, Nadine, who appeared in the second season in the show titled "What the Butler Sang." I think she was portrayed by Ellen Ratner...

Episodes[edit]

It seems that when TVBUff90 made edits on 18 October 2017‎ moving the season/episode/ratings summary from the Impact section to the Episodes section, the First Aired and Last Aired dates for seasons 4-6 were changed and made incorrect. It seems this was a mistaken transposition based on information from the pages that are the source for the ratings information of the individual episodes (cited as a source on the "List of The Nanny episodes" wikipedia entry, which also has incorrect episode air dates for all the episodes of those seasons). The correct (I think) air dates are available on IMDB and align with the information at the cited sources for the ratings of each episode.

Missing celeb from Characters list[edit]

Joan Van Ark appeared in a 1998 episode as 'Margo Lange'. Fran accidentally wiped off her trademark mole and destroyed her career.

"One of a handful of successful American comedies..."[edit]

Am I missing something here? The article seems to be making a big deal of the fact relatively few shows have Jewish characters. Fewer than 2% of Americans identify themselves as being Jewish according to the article on the Demography of the United States. So by rights, you'd expect less than one in fifty sitcoms to be in some way "Jewish" if demographically fair. To then list big, big shows like Rhoda, Seinfeld, Will & Grace and say that somehow "The Nanny" is special in having a Jewish lead character just seems (to me) ridiculous. There is a not wildly different number of Native Americans compared with Jewish Americans, and yet I haven't seen any Native American sitcoms at all, and something like two or three times as many Asian-Americans, and you definitely don't see more, bigger shows than Seinfeld with Laotian or Bangladeshi American lead characters! Fansite tone[edit]

Come on ... here is the most egregious example, among many:

  • "The characters obviously loved one another and enjoyed coming to work. Such great chemistry is rare on television, where egos frequently get in the way of product. Not so here. Miss Drescher's great talent, writing skills, creativity and love for her cast and craft culminated in a close to perfect sitcom. "The Nanny" is sometimes called a modern "I Love Lucy." Miss Drescher greatly admired Lucille Ball and studied her performances. "The Nanny" is every bit the classic "I Love Lucy" is, with not a "dud" episode in the entire six year run. Repeated viewings never are tiresome; one frequenty notices details one may have missed before. "The Nanny" is utterly charming and sincere, with fully rounded consistent characters, superior writing and a truly talented, professional cast. Miss Drescher appears to be very real and down to earth, in addition to being a wonderful comedienne, producer, decorator (she assisted with the beautiful sets) and overall organizer. Television today desperately needs her back! If you enjoy "The Nanny," you will love her hilarious film "The Beautician and the Beast." "

Wikipedia is not a fan site. There is also what appears to be tons of original research, also not appropriate to Wikipedia. Couldn't agree more. I'm sitting here watching an episode. It's cliched, trite, over acted and very unfunny. I can't believe it was a primetime comedy - compare it to classics like Cheers, Frasier and Seinfeld. DVD Dates[edit]

Where is the Region 1 DVD release date for the 3rd season coming from? Dec. 17th is a Monday, and DVD releases are on Tuesdays. Wikipedia gets a very bad reputation for DVD release dates, especially of TV shows, because sources are not cited (as in this case) and lots of supposed release dates get posted that could not possibly be accurate. For example, as someone "in the biz", I know that Sony is only just now announcing October releases, so anything as far out as December is either an unverified rumor or somebody's pure imagination. I recommend that it get deleted from this article until Sony's announcement date, or else point to good sources that provided this info.

Looking for help writing an article about the spin-offs and crossovers of this series[edit]

I am writing an article about all of the series which are in the same shared reality as this one through spin-offs and crossovers. I could use a little help expanding the article since it is currently extremely dense and a bit jumbled with some sentence structures being extremely repetitive. I would like to be able to put this article into article space soon. Any and all help in writing the article would be appreciated, even a comment or two on the talk page would help. Where are the remaining last seasons? Does anbody know the cause why Sony doesn't release them? There are so many series available on DVD, why not The Nanny? Amusing theme song to British and Australian ears[edit]

In the UK, Australia and other countries which share common UK idioms, the line of the theme song: "She was out on her fanny" is often a cause of amusement and sometimes surprise to many viewers. In the USA, "fanny" refers to backside or buttocks and thus is quite apt, but in the UK and elsewhere "fanny" has long been a common euphemism for vulva. American viewers would have the same reaction to a line such as "out on her pussy"- fanny was the word more favoured used until "pussy", borrowed from US English became more common, but is still used widely. I wonder if this may be mentioned in the article as it's quite a genuine cultural point. For example in Australia when a Nanny episode is shown with children present it's common to hear them pipe up a loud chorus of "Fanny, fanny, they said fanny". In any Australian's life, the first time you hear an American say "fanny" in a (to our ears) odd context ("the children were naughty so were sent to bed... with a slap on the fanny for good measure") it does tend to raise eyebrows. Often it doesn't sound funny, but rather, weird. Usually this happens when you are a young child hearing it on a US TV series, one of your parents then explains it to you, and it makes sense. Since the word is mentioned rather a lot on US TV and in films, it does not have to be the Nanny theme song where you hear it for the first time, so this is not especially relevant to The Nanny. I first heard it in the 1970s long before The Nanny. The reaction described sounds very immature to me (even for children). Also, "fanny" isn't really a rude word and is more a childish euphemism (like "wee wee" or "botty"). Format (talk) 10:04, 20 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
