Map is out of date[edit]

The map at the beginning of this article is out of date. Malaysia and North Korea have severed diplomatic relations. Please update. 203.106.220.76 (talk) 07:43, 6 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

ASEAN Membership[edit]

This article in the section on membership of International Organizations starts off with Association_of_Southeast_Asian_Nations yet that big and detailed Wikipedia page does not mention DPRK ("North Korea") even once. DPRK is not a member of ASEAN there are only 10 members, neither is "South Korea". They may have some special status such as observer. So this needs checking and correcting since the link given doesn't even mention DPRK at all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.210.180.133 (talk) 07:56, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out. The DPRK is not a member of ASEAN, but it is a member of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF). However, ASEAN Regional Forum redirects to the ASEAN page, which briefly mentions ARF and North Korea's membership under "Foreign Relations". I have added an appropriate citation.--Jack Upland (talk) 08:24, 23 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

contradiction[edit]

the article contradicts itself: in the overview section it states North korea established relations with 66 nations in a decade, whereas in the history section, this number is reduced to a mere 63 countries, which of these is the correct number?

Cuba[edit]

So, how are the relations with Cuba? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.85.98.210 (talk) 01:36, 28 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I've added something. It's surprising this has been dealt with before.--Jack Upland (talk) 07:31, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

cease-fire[edit]

Minor quibble over this section:why is it that that is so overly used that everyone sais that in there sentences because that is not right

North Korea's relationship with the South has informed much of its post-World War II history and still drives much of its foreign policy. North Korea and South Korea have had a difficult and acrimonious relationship in the five decades since the Korean war.

The Korean war has not ended yet; all that's in place is a cease-fire.

James Trainor 18:49, 21 Jan 2004 (UTC)

General Clean Up[edit]

I've tried to make the article slightly more readable. There's still a lot of waffle and awkward phrasing going on though.

I changed "international legal regime to combat terrorism" to "international anti-terrorism legislation". It is unclear whether this was what the original text was meant to convey or not. It was unclear what the original text was meant to convey at all ;) 80.108.106.196

I've been updating this page esp with relation to the 6-party talks agreements. (The above passage/section is not by me though). Jsw663 05:53, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Copied from State[edit]

There is a major portion of this article taken verbatim from http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/2792.htm without quotation marks. I'm going to edit it tomorrow, so I'm not removing it immediately, as it is US Govt and therefore it's not a copyright violation. Epthorn 10:09, 14 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(sigh) and by "tomorrow" I mean when I get a break from Real_Life. Epthorn (talk) 14:10, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sweden?[edit]

I heard that Sweden is the only Western Nation to establish a diplomatic mission in Pyongyang. It also mentions in the Canadian Travel Report on the DPRK to report to the Swedish Embassy there as there isn't a Canadian one. So it would be a good subject to add to this page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.26.36.13 (talk) 07:10, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Burma[edit]

Guys adding a Burma page is necessary considering the scale of recent cooperation between the two countries in the strategic and military spectrum I could go into it more but you guys get the idea somebody make it I have all the sources —Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.105.67.58 (talk) 02:39, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Countries that maintian diplomatic relations with North Korea[edit]

I have a question, may somebody tell me if North Korea maintains diplomatic relations with: Andorra, Argentina, Greece, Haiti, Iraq, and Papua New Guinea. Oxana879 (talk) 00:49, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Latvia[edit]

The sentence “France is one of only two European Union members not to recognise North Korea, the other being Latvia” is wrong. Latvia does have relations with North Korea [1]. By the way, in this same article it's written that “France and Estonia are the only EU countries that do not have diplomatic relations with the DPRK”. — Glebchik (talk) 15:14, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I remember someone raised the issue with N.Korea-Latvia, replacing the latter country with Estonia on one place. However, couldn't find sources to that effect, though it's likely to be true. Miacek and his crime-fighting dog (t) 15:25, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

what a onesided article[edit]

its only about the west, why do we need to know that france doesnt recognize north korea but not that north korea helps mynmar to make their own nuke, neither are the relation listed with vietnam and other south asian countries. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kasmanis (talkcontribs) 05:52, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This remains a problem. Developing countries are unrepresented: not just Asian, but also Africa, Latin America, etc. Overall, countries that have good relations with the DPRK have been left out or minimised. Malta is another example.--Jack Upland (talk) 01:38, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have added some of these countries. Strangely, some of these relationships had a main page but weren't mentioned here.--Jack Upland (talk) 08:25, 8 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Link to an official North Korean site ?[edit]

Does anybody know a link to the North Korean Government ? Or the Democrativ Peoples Republic as they call themselves ? Is http://www.korea-dpr.com/relations.html something official ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.187.96.11 (talk) 11:44, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I believe this is the official north Korean government however I am guessing this is propaganda from the north Korean government so it probably would not be a reliable resourceJonnymoon96 (talk) 16:41, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Jonnymoon96, Naenara is the official web portal of North Korea. There is no separate website for the Government. There is little about foreign relations on Naenara though. There are, however, news from KCNA and those sometimes touch upon foreign relations. There is a section dedicated to reunification on the website too. Botswana has broken relations with the DPRK[edit]

Structure[edit]

The structure of the Bilateral Relations section is very hard to follow - especially all those subheadings. Can someone suggest a fix?--Jack Upland (talk) 07:35, 20 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps no country section should have sub-sections (as China does). Any excess material can be moved to the main article.--Jack Upland (talk) 01:57, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think ordering by continent has helped, but I don't see the advantage of squeezing the text into a table.--Jack Upland (talk) 07:59, 16 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

no evidence that north Korea terminated relations with Pakistan[edit]

i see no evidence that north Korea has ever terminated relations with Pakistan should I remove that partJonnymoon96 (talk) 15:33, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Uganda[edit]

It would be good to add something about Uganda, but the situation is unclear at the moment.--Jack Upland (talk) 06:40, 30 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It's still unclear what the ongoing relationship is, but I've started the section.--Jack Upland (talk) 02:54, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lede[edit]

I don't understand what the issues are.--Jack Upland (talk) 01:35, 9 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

According to Prinsgezinde: "(Really though? Only all communist countries? There was already much tension between SU and China)" – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 12:07, 9 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the weasel tag as I found you had effectively eliminated that problem (good job by the way), but I still find it oddly simplified to only say they had good relations with Communist countries (which excludes Socialist countries, by the way). As I said, there was a schism between China and the SU and Vietnam was also in conflict with China, so it's not as logical as it appears now. The Soviets and Chinese both supported it because it was close and they wouldn't want it to fall into "Western" hands, but what policy made it attractive to other Communist countries? Bataaf van Oranje (Prinsgezinde) (talk) 14:29, 9 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There are two sentences tagged. The first is: "The foreign relations of North Korea (officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea) have been shaped by its conflict with South Korea and its historical ties with world Communism." This is an attempt to neatly summarise the history of North Korea's foreign relations. I think it is accurate. It doesn't ignore the Sino-Soviet split. North Korea had fairly good relations with both sides. North Korea also had ties with Eastern Europe, Cuba, etc. The other sentence is: "At the start of the Cold War, North Korea only had diplomatic recognition by Communist countries." I have added the information that NK wasn't recognised by a non-Communist country till Algeria in 1958, that is, 10 years after its official founding. The article indicates that NK only began to achieve wider recognition in the 1970s.--Jack Upland (talk) 01:37, 10 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Slovenia - North Korea relations[edit]

I've looked around on the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Relations website and there is no indication there, or anywhere else that Slovenia has a strong relationship with North Korea. In fact, there is no clear indication that we have any special relationship. So why does the section on this matter have such bold unclaimed statements in it? I'm inclined to remove it. 86.58.58.201 (talk) 13:23, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please be bold and remove any changeable information that lacks reliable sources. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 13:50, 14 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Armenia[edit]

Republic of Armenia does not and has never maintained an embassy or any other diplomatic mission in DPRK. Please, remove this false information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.43.141.100 (talk) 00:00, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Armenia and North Korea have had diplomatic relations since 1992. They don't have embassies, but this is not a prerequisite for diplomatic relations. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 00:22, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have removed the offending information.--Jack Upland (talk) 00:54, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Global Map needs to be updated or to be deleted ![edit]

The global map is hopelessly out-of-date. For example Canada has currently no relations with DPRK. Either the map should be updated or it should be taken out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HVFusse (talkcontribs) 19:39, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You're correct, HVFusse, the map is very out of date. I've placed an update request for the image on Commons where it is hosted and notified the people who have edited it. – Finnusertop (talkcontribs) 20:10, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Based on the National Committee on North Korea's latest report on diplomatic relations, the only major error on the map is Costa Rica. A territory and unrecognized area needs to be fixed, too, but that's all I can determine. Canada still has diplomatic ties, albeit restricted. I'll add the updated map within the next 24 hours or so. If there's any other verifiable errors that need to be addressed, please let me know. Coinmanj (talk) 21:09, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Vietnam[edit]

The son of a former staff member in the Vietnamese embassy in Pyongyang, who also attended Kim Il-sung University between 1998 and 2002, gave an interview in 2004 with South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo about the experiences he had while living there.

How is this notable?--Jack Upland (talk) 23:55, 13 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lead - peace moves[edit]

Just to explain the edits I made to the lead. North Korea's peace overture began with Kim's New Year's address, which was followed by participation in the Winter Olympics. It did not begin with a meeting with Trump. Despite what Trump has said, there is little evidence of a personal connection between the two men. The lead could still be improved.--Jack Upland (talk) 19:12, 28 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
