Wiktionary template link[edit]
Wikipedia is not a dictionary. However it does have a sister project that is a dictionary. This entry is a prototype for a proposed new way of dealing with dictionary definitions, as opposed to the current, rather harsh, "Transwiki and delete" routine that cuts off the interaction between Wiktionary and Wikipedia.
Opinions on this prototype are very welcome.
Advantages:
- Useful for readers, they are provided with easy access to more information.
- Useful for editors, previously it was difficult to know what to link when writing because it is not always obvious what a term should be in Wiktionary and which should be in Wikipedia. Now any debatable term can be linked, and the reader will be redirected to wiktionary if appropriate.
- Promotes Wiktionary - Wikipedia still has much higher readership than Wiktionary but the latter is getting really good.
- Less arguments on VfD. The stakes are lower on whether something is a dicdef or not because there are no outright deletions - merely replacements with a link.
- No cross-project redirects. We could redirect directly from WP to Wiktionary. However cross-project redirects are evil for several reasons. This method avoids them.
