Martial arts category for Wikipedians[edit]

Jiujutsu is not the sole base art of the samurai, in fact I would go so far as to say that the "base art" of the samurai was kenjutsu, but in truth most samurai trained in schools that taught a holisic approach to warfare including everything from etiquette to generalship to open hand combat to naginata. I agree Edededed's opinion. It can be quite handy to see who has knowledge about a certain field of whatsoever. Even if he/she did not contribute to an article on this topic and without having to actively scan all the user pgaes.
Some people seem to have a problem with people saying "I study martial arts". What if someone says: "I am studying northern-italian history". Is this person showing off too ?
I hope to soon find one or two people signing into the same martial arts category as I did. We can then form a kind of team signing responsible for all articles around our martial art. -- Thomas-

Of course then we have people with 19 entries. Does that mean actual practice or gee this martial art sounds cool therefore I'm interested in it. When someone can't even spell "encyclopedia" correctly, despite it being on every single page of Wikipedia, I tend to take their statements with a grain of salt. Anyway, in regards to Rehse-sensei's statement above, I have training in about 20 different arts... but 17 of those arts are maybe a few days' training cobbled together. So I have, for example Tang Soo Do hand strikes, but nothing else of the art. However, I myself have not entered my name in any art that I don't have extensive training in, and I agree that nobody else should, either. The S 18:44, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

At first I smiled and then, like a bad after taste, got bothered by the entry. What can I say I take my martial arts seriously. Cute but not a martial art. Zero - Grand master and sensei. Self-styled fighting techique involving the use of the Z-Saber
Tony Sidaway - Zero's current disciple, still learning the basics
Wolf ODonnel - Intermediate student
The Pink Panther - Advanced student. Is the only person besides Zero who can use weapons other than a Z-saber and Z-buster.

Freestyle, no particular style/school association[edit]

With your removal you seem to have removed my entry with it. I think Freestyle, even being no style in itself, is a approach towards Martial arts and thus should be listed. I practice Martial Arts, but never received training from a master of a particular style. Being an autodidact, i have to put even more effort into training, for progress relies on my unassisted motivation. Please explain to me why this makes it any less valid as an entry here, for this is a list of WIKIPEDIANS not Martial arts. People who don't feel associated with any style/system should have a place here. I simply wouldn't feel comfortable listing me under "Mixed Martial Arts", or "Jeet kune do" just because I draw inspiration from those "systems". --CouchFuzius 17:21, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A missing (entirely) category[edit]

So, where are the list of Okinawan martial arts? I wouldn't suggest adding them under Japanese martial arts, as that denies the historical significance of them, as means for the Okinawan people to fight the occupying Japanese Army without weapons (which were outlawed by said army). -Darryl Hamlin 16:01, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That is true, but it becomes sort of gray when we talk about styles of karate like Shotokan or Kyokushin. Is Shotokan Okinawan or Japanese? Funakoshi Gichin was Okinawan, to be sure, but Shotokan was sort of the standard "new" karate made just for the Japanese. Kyokushin karate is a style of karate, which is originally Okinawan, but it was created in Japan. The creator, Oyama Masutatsu, was Korean, however. Does this make it Okinawan, Japanese, or Korean?

I suppose we could stick all "purely" Okinawan karate styles in a section made for Okinawa, though, leaving Shotokan, Kyokushin, and others under Japan. How does that sound? :) Edededed 01:28, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another gray area comes from the fact that Okinawa is currently a prefecture of Japan. Styles are usually listed (on conventional websites) by the country which currently occupies the area (for example, if in theory there were a martial art developed in Khazaria, you wouldn't say it was founded in such, but in Russia, with a footnote saying it was founded in Khazaria before it became part of Russia. merge catagories[edit]

This catagory should be merged with Category: Wikipedian martial artists or vice versa. one list and set of subcatagories rather then two. Clearly defineing who is a martial artist and who is just interested in martial arts with the Category:Wikipedians_interested_in_martial_arts and either the Category:Wikipedian martial artists or Category:Wikipedians by martial art rather then both photodude 08:35, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your own fighting style.[edit]

A fighting style that you personally train of or is attributed to yourself is welcome here. However, if you add a article about it and it is found to be not notable, it may be deleted.
