I was wondering why you took out all the references to academic environments in the direct manipulation interface article. I have been doing research on the topic since 1988 and have rarely seen the term used outside academic environments, so some form of mention of this milieu seems needed, somewhere in a direct manipulation interface article. The user talk page is a good place as any to place messages like this. I find it handy because it triggers a warning of new messages. You are certainly right about the importance of the difference between direct manipulation and the GUI and WIMP notions, at least in my view. I was a bit too timid when I created the article, and since then I have always been hesitant about adding to it because of the controversies involved. The problem, as always, is with Shneiderman. I found it very entertaining to watch him fuming as Eric Horvitz talked about his visions of intelligent interfaces at SIGUIST 2004 in Vancouver, and I wanted to laugh when he got up at the end to pound him over the head (verbally). But his style also makes him many ennemies. To me he is the champion of the direct manipulation interface, but following him too closely leads to a style rather far from the Neutral Point of View favored in this encyclopedia. But how do you present the opposition between the direct manipulation cocnecept and the Adaptive Interface (or Intelligent User Interface) in this kind of place. Just make links with no comments?
