I put the dog definition back at the top. Sorry mav, but this is the more common meaning to non-computer people. Wikipedia readers are probably mostly computer geeks like us but maybe this will change someday ;-) Merphant

No biggie. --mav

mutt as in "of mixed descent"[edit]

Why is the term "mutt" (A person of mixed racial descent) not in Wikipedia, as it is in urban dictionary? "Slang" doesn't belong here? I think the labelling as "derogatory" depends on the viewpoint and is PC. --Philipp Grunwald (talk) 15:53, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bolding for Acronyms[edit]

Pace @Bkonrad:, I think using bolding is the quickest, neatest way to indicate the source of an acronym. Anmccaff (talk) 00:37, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Personal preference aside, it's not supported by WP:MOSDAB or any other section of WP:MOS that I'm aware of. olderwiser 00:44, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly supported by precedent. From Acronym:

*Pronounced as a word, containing only initial letters

    • NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization
    • Scuba: self-contained underwater breathing apparatus
    • Laser: light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation
    • GIF: Graphics Interchange Format
  • Pronounced as a word, containing non-initial letters
    • Amphetamine: alpha-methylphenethylamine
    • Gestapo: Geheime Staatspolizei ('secret state police')

**Interpol: International Criminal Police Organization

  • Pronounced as a string of letters, containing non-initial letters
    • PMN: polymorphonuclear leukocytes
    • OCA: oculocutaneous albinism
    • PCM: paracoccidioidomycosis
  • Pronounced as a word, containing a mixture of initial and non-initial letters
    • AIDS: acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
    • Necco: New England Confectionery Company
    • Radar: radio detection and ranging
There are numerous other examples, by the look of it. Anmccaff (talk) 01:33, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Those are examples of acronyms in the MOS, not guidance on how to present the derivation of the term using bolding. Very few of the articles use such bolding. In this case, the initialism is self-evident and requires no emphasis. olderwiser 01:38, 22 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 25 June 2022[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Comic moved, but no consensus for the disambiguation page. There is clear consensus favouring a move for the comic strip, so it should be moved ASAP. But there is no enthusiasm for treating the dog type as primary. A second RM to focus on just the disambiguation page can be done later. – It can be argued that the primary topic of both "mutt" and "mutts" is mongrel, the type of dog. The comic strip in particular is directly based on the type of dog. They should be WP:PRIMARYREDIRECTs to that article. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 00:26, 25 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Neutral on 1st move, but Support (alternate) 2nd move — i.e. the comic strip's article should be moved to "Mutts (comic strip)", then the plural "Mutts" should redirect to the disambiguation page. Paintspot Infez (talk) 19:40, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose 1st, support 2nd, I'm not sure there is a primary topic for this term but the comic strip clearly isn't primary so per Paintspot I'd have no primary topic. While Google suggests the dog may be primary the race meaning and other meaning come up as much. Crouch, Swale (talk) 10:04, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral on 1st, support 2nd. Basically identical reasoning as above. Skynxnex 17:51, 1 July 2022‎ signing after the fact Skynxnex (talk) 02:01, 2 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
