Anyone opposed to merging this page with community ecology? Guettarda 21:59, 17 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Why is that? The terms are synonymous sekte. I think that comm. ecol has wider usage than synecology (albeit, in part it's a US-Europe difference). Guettarda 19:28, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)
What makes you say the ecology versions have widespread usage. Synecology/Autecology seem to me more official terminology. I am also unsure as to their status as synonyms, rather than terms that are awfully close in their meaning and usage.--ZayZayEM 10:16, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
My experience (as a community ecologist) is that Pop/Comm are more commonly used than Aut/Syn. Of course there is also a European/Anglo-American difference here...Europeans are more likely to use terms like Aut/Syn. But even there, Pop/Comm are more widely used. Right now I am just talking off the top of my head though, but I will provide evidence in support of this. Guettarda 14:11, 22 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I think maybe you mean "scientific" rather than "official"; there are no officials of language in English-speaking countries that I am aware of. I agree with User:Guettarda. They are essentially synonymous terms and somewhat archaic, arising out of the period when ecology was diverging away from biology as a real -ology in its own right. I did the merge before reading this discussion, mostly on the basis that the definitions given for all the options were sounding confusing (like "synecology is the study of ecosystems"; they are both studies of ecosystems, but look at different levels of organization). I consider autecology to be really what most ecologists would today call "Population biology" (but population ecology is ok, as well). Anyway, any subtleties that others are aware of (alluded to by User:ZayZayEM) should be handled in Wiktionary - Marshman 03:08, 14 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
