Colleges[edit]

Are there many colleges in Farnham? All I found is The Surrey Institute of Art & Design--Hhielscher 19:50, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Yes, their is also Farnham College, there are other colleges in the surrounding area as well, such as Farnborough Technology College and All Hallows Sixth Form College, amongst others. - 86.16.131.136 (talk) 15:53, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Surrey Institute of Art & Design is now technically a university. Farnham College is a sixth form college in the town which educates 16-19 year old students. I have just edited the geography of Farnham section: TG312274 17:06, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

SIAD has not become a University yet. The merged institution is currently a University College and has not yet received the status of a university - their website is hoping for 2007. Timrollpickering 10:48, 7 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There is another college in Farnham - Shuttleworth College. It's in the north side of Farnham, about a mile out of the town centre up at the end of Crondall Lane. I added this a few days ago but it was taken away. - John Pickering

Carnival[edit]

Andrew Hudson, stop spreading lies there is no carnival i wish there was. BUT THERE IS NOT! Are you even from Farnham? Or are you from Bournemouth and and you got confused. BTW are you the same Andrew Hudson of cricketing fame?

There is a carnival in Farnham, though it is extremely small. It consists of about 5 small floats and a few people "marching"

Oh, and by the way there IS a farnham carnival - it's much more than 5 floats (more like 50) and should be mentioned on this page. - John Pickering

John, bit stupid, everybody knows that you've been vandalising the site, or someone has been using your ip address to edit this Wiki. Think about it.

No their are two annual Carnivals in Farnham, Hale Carnival, the smaller one consisting of about 10-20 floats and then the bigger Farnham Carnival, consisting of more than 50 floats, more like 90, 100. - 86.16.131.136 (talk) 15:53, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There is a carnival every year, lived here all my life... don't you read the Farnham Herald??

Please sign your name folks with 4 tildes. Thanks SuzanneKn 18:19, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Natives and inhabitants[edit]

Is there a word for natives and inhabitants of Farnham? Farnhamians? Farnhamites? Just curious! Lewis · talk · contribs 17:55, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, almost solely relating to certain big cities in Britain will you find such names - it is best to describe people as Farnham residents or workers since many people in Britain do not work in the same town.Adam37 (talk) 09:04, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Public library & shopping sections[edit]

The contents here is not exactly groundbreaking. I think I'll reduce it considerably. Just wanted to check if anyone had a problem with this. SuzanneKn 17:59, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Changed this to be more fact-based and seem less like an advert. I work at the library so can verify that current information is accurate :) Supervegan (talk) 10:54, 24 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Farnham coat of arms.jpg[edit]

Image:Farnham coat of arms.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Religion[edit]

What about religious worship places in Farnham?

Could someone who knows make a list of them?

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.119.210.231 (talk) 14:06, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is a Catholic Church and there are Anglican and Baptist buildings in Farnham. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.52.216.96 (talk) 14:19, 5 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

I propose that Lower Bourne be merged into Farnham. I think that the content in the Lower Bourne article can easily be explained in the context of Farnham, and the Farnham article is of a reasonable size that the merging of Lower Bourne will not cause any problems as far as article size or undue weight is concerned. Guidance is available in WP:UKVILLAGES and the degree of buffer zone must be considered, and not just to the extent this is a numerical divide. In particular, you may be better placed than I to state whether any historic and cultural ties remain with Farnham. The model of a Localities heading is set out in the guidance. - - Adam37 Talk 18:51, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Following the merge rules on time, silence and consent (and of course WP:UKCITIES), this merge has now been completed.

School merge[edit]

I have suggested on the South Farnham School article that it should be merged to here. Generally primary schools are not considered notable and are usually merged to the locale article. Atlas-maker (talk) 08:15, 26 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think it would be a shame to delete the South Farnham School article (which is what the result of a "merge" would be), but can think of little reason within Wikipedia policy not to do so. With regard to notability, the school has consistently been one of the top primary schools in the country, and the headmaster, Andrew Carter, was recently knighted for his work with the school (Stephen Sutton, Daniel Day-Lewis and Angelina Jolie on Birthday Honours list), but I doubt that it is enough to save it. Second world war defences[edit]

A section on defence infrastructure might be useful. An image I found for Farnham is

Anti-invasion Defences in Britain during the Second World War H2465

SovalValtos (talk) 19:18, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. There are extensive anti-tank defences still remaining in the south of Farnham, especially around Moor Park and Waverley Abbey (dragon's teeth at Waverley Abbey). A large concrete cylindrical block identical to the one shown in the WWII image still stands at Moor Park (you can see it in the bottom left corner of this photo). BabelStone (talk) 20:10, 8 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The main local defence line generally skirts Farnham to the north. What I think is needed here is narrowly focused content unique to Farnham. There are plenty of more general articles which should not be duplicated. What sources are there on the local contractors and details of construction?SovalValtos (talk) 16:22, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Anglo-Saxons[edit]

Pretty sure the Farnham mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles in 894 is in Essex? I don't know of any other mentions of a Farnham in the Chronicles...

There is a Latin charter from 688 that references the Farnham in Surrey, though, spelt Fernham. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.251.85.22 (talk) 19:03, 12 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
