  • Abstain for now. I desperately want to see a consensus, because, in fact, we are getting one line articles on every Olympian. They're coming in at a trickle all day long. Each is a sentence or so, and each says no more than birthdate, team, 2004 Olympics. I think they're all a mess & would like to see them deleted, but I'm glad Supadawg listed one here so we can see community feelings. Geogre 18:13, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep, tentatively. If we could get someone from Italy to fill in some information from that perspective, this could be interesting. Generally, I figure that these random short articles on Olympic athletes are probably not taking up all that much space, so it's probably not worth the effort it would take to catch them as they are created and delete them all. It's not very useful information right now, but by the time the next Olympics come around, some people might be interested in investigating previous athletes. Aranel 18:47, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
    • But wouldn't it be sufficient to have an overview article listing all medal winners of the 2004 Olympics? That way, they'd all be nicely cuddled together in one place, still show up in a search, and we'd have a lot less clutter. Weak delete. -- Ferkelparade π 19:11, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. Winning an Olympic medal is a pretty significant accomplishment and deserving of a bio. The article is accurate and NPOV, if stubby. I'd vote keep even if she was a bronze medalist. — Gwalla | Talk 20:13, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete or redirect to an annotated list of winners. Wikipedia is not supposed to be a biographical dictionary. More B-Movie Bandit type stuff it seems.     • Oh, and while I agree with you on the B-Movie Bandit, I don't think this is the case here. There's been a few of these, but I for one am happy to clean these up, and I don't think I'm the only one. I'm considering starting a WikiProject come the end of the Games. Ambi 09:36, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Redirect to an annotated list of Olympic medalists as suggested by Jallan, only because this article is not likely to grow out of stubhood. However, I would not object to articles about Olympic atheletes forking off from the annotated list, if an editor is willing to write more than a short blurb. • Benc • 20:53, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • I wrote that summary as anonymous registering short after. I firstly compiled the 200 freestyle womens page modeling it after other swimming events and since seems a common pattern there to place a link for every participant name I just assumed it was right to go forth and fill up a page about Federica Pellegrini.
So if a decision not to include that kind of bios prevails, probably events pages should also be modified consequently.
Nevertheless I'm going to add some info for Federica, so keep check the page before a final decision (she's the youngest italian participant ever to an olympic swimming contest and also the current national record holder - achieved in semifinals).

  • Keep. It would be nice to have an article for all medal winners, and this is a start. There's lots of room to grow for this stub; I can't imagine that this is the only race she has ever finished in the medals in. And if it is, well, that's a notable fact in itself.   • I'd say if someone is an Olympic medal winner in an individual event, they deserve an article (perhaps more so in some events than others - swimming is rather more widely contested than, say, women's modern pentathlon). If someone is a medal winner in a team event, and people can't give them more than one line, then they should perhaps all be listed in a team page. Where you can give a detail biography on a team event athlete then they should have a separate article. So in this case, keep. Average Earthman 09:03, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep. Olympic medal winners are most certainly encyclopedic. If it's a cruddy article, put it on Cleanup. They are likely to grow, and there are people interested in working on them (me for one, but I'm waiting until after the Olympics are over for the individual articles). Ambi 09:17, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
  • Comment: If I'm reading the numbers correctly, this database has information on over 33,000 medals awarded in the history of the modern Olympics. According to this page there are 400 events in current Olympiads. That's 1,200 medals each time. Even accounting for the fact that some athletes/teams win multiple medals, that's still a lot of stubs. Far be it from me to belittle the achievement of winning an Olympic medal, but I do think we should limit articles to those athletes about whom we have more to say. The 300 "Olympic heroes" mentioned here might be a good start. —Triskaideka 15:36, 18 Aug 2004 (UTC)
