Les (E.) Claypool III[edit]

I was watching a mini-marathon of mixed episodes of Trigun and Cowboy Bebop and while watching the credits it said that the head sound editor (or something to that effect) for the English version was Les Claypool III (in Trigun)/ Les E. Claypool III (in Cowboy Bebop). Is this the same guy? It seems like something Les would do. --JonnyLightning (talk) 06:20, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The bass guitar on the picture of Les at the top of this article[edit]

I think the caption for the picture should say "Les Claypool at Bonnaroo playing a " and have the model/make of the guitar. There are so many guitars in his equipment list, which one is it?

The Weasel Guy begs to differ[edit]

The Chronology on this article is wrong. I first saw Primus at Barrington Hall in 1987. The infamous "Acid Punch Wine Dinner" was on September 25, 1987. Les, Todd and Jay played as Primus. They already had songs like "Tommy the Cat," "Pudding Time," and "Sgt. Baker" down at that point. I was a major attraction that evening because I flipped out(too much punch) and put a ferret in my trousers. Any relation between Primus's Les Claypool and the Les Claypool who's done sound work for several anime productions? --FOo

Quite possible, but I have no idea. A trip to All Movie Guide shows him as sound editor for Armitage III. --Damaged Again

I'd be very wary of AMG - there are several errors there, including a number of different people being listed as one. IMDB are more reliable, I think, and they seem to think that Primus' Les and the other Les are different people; compare [1], [2] and [3]. --Camembert

There are a number of anime titles attributed to Les E. Claypool III for directing Alternate Dialog Recording (ADR) sessions, but whether or not if Claypool III and Les Claypool of Primus is the same person is not directly known. (Anime ADR work is project-based, running only a few months out of a year, and it's entirely possible to do it and be a rock star, albeit a very busy one.)

I found this page on Anime News Network, a private encyclopedia, with a photo in the upper right corner... I'd say No, solely from the skillset needed to do such work (despite sound production knowledge, I don't think he would know Japanese). gabby la la opinions[edit]

i'm curious about this "alienated many of his fans" (or "career blunder" and such in history) thing re gabby la la. i admit i havent listened to gabby la la but how does it go so far as "alienating" fans?

A lot of his fans believe that Les and Gabby are having an affair, despite Les' 10 year marriage and children. Gabby is engaged to her tour manager however, and I don't believe there was anything romantic between them. Blatantly sexual, possibly, but not romantic.

All I can say is that I seriously, seriously doubt they had an affair or that there is in fact anything romantic between them. As for his choice of having her in the band, I think he at least did a good job of "toning her down." By this, I mean I have been to her website and listened to her music in hopes of hearing another good artist, but could not make it through the first 30 seconds of a song. Quite frankly, her singing was shrill and the music was simply not that good. Gear listing[edit]

I'm just a lurker around here, but someone seriously needs to edit the list of equipment that Claypool uses and explain it more. What is an "anti-matter bass"? Someone needs to explain what a Whamola is for those not in the know on the page.

Edit: A whamola is basically a square stick of wood with one bass string attached to the bottom of it and to a handle on the top of it. It has no frets. You can pluck it or hit it with a drumstick, the latter of which Les tends to do more often than the former. It is played by using a combination of fretting it and using the handle. The handle can do a whammy effect that is similar to just pushing the whammy in and altering the sound of the note by holding it where you want it. You can hear Les playing the whamola in his songs "Whamola" and "Mushroom Men" (these are the ones I know for sure, but there's probably others). As for his basses, I know he uses a Carl Thompson 6- and 4-string and a bunch of other ones, including his bass-banjo (used, for example, in "Iowan Gal") as well as the 4-string stand-up electric bass. His Antimatter bass looks like his original 4-string and is also a Carl Thompson, but it has a different wood pattern that is darker. Here are some pictures:

This is good information. It should be added. Of course, I am no one on wikipedia either. I'm very curious about Les' gear. I also wonder how much he uses his fretless bass(es). His style seems very atonal to me, which would lend itself to a fretless. However, you can also bend the pitch of a fretted bass and extreme amount. Especially when playing fast, it can sound atonal. What do you guys think would be better, the current layout (emphasis on the bands) or a mixed chronological layout (i.e. Holy Mackerel between Punchbowl & Brown Album)? We had a similar(albeit opposite) question come up previously with the Steve Morse article. At that time the complaint was that it was chronological and not divided between the many acts he's performed with. I did a fast re-org on it and concensus seem to be positive. I realize your proposing the opposite situation. I guess if the "final product" maintains clarity then I can't see anyone having a problem with it. Thanks for the quick reply, I was expecting anything for... a while, at least.

With Steve Morse, I agree it makes sense to keep his seperate, as they are all rather prolific and run parrallel to each other, whereas with Les they're all just one-shot side-projects (with the exception of Live Frogs) that can easily be squeezed in between each other.

In Metallica's Behind the Music, Claypool said that during the audition he wanted the others to "jam on some Isley Brothers tunes", after Lars Ulrich asked whether he's "not really used to playing this kind of music". James Hetfield remarked that Claypool didn't win the job because "he was too good."

I personally heard he was deemed "too funky."

I personally ask the question, what kind of world would we live in if Les was simply "That bassist for Metallica?" He would probably not have anywhere near the individual style he has now, and we would not have been treated to all his individual work that he's produced. Not the same guy unless someone got it wrong. I believe his full name is actually "Leslie." Les has a new venture[edit]

hi guys. I ran into Les on 6/27/10 in San Francisco at the Pinot Days wine tasting. Les, with a few helpers, was exhibiting his new winery called Claypool Cellars. Their logo was an elephant balancing on a ball holding a wine class in its trunk. I'm not sure if they have a website, but they did have some wine.

Proficient Status[edit]

I feel like his summary should mention his stature as one of the best and most appreciated bass players of all time (every respectable ranking of bassists I've ever seen lists him in the top 3). Almost all Wikipedia articles do this where applicable. For example, Flea's page spends almost an entire paragraph on this accomplishment. In this case, if somebody stumbled on Claypool's page they would have no idea of his status as one of the most important musicians of the past half century, which seems doesn't seem right.
