After reading the above, I still don't understand why can't a person delete hir own personal page without discretion of the Wikipedian community? Would anyone direct me to any or hopefully most recent discussion on this topics.kt2 06:17, 11 Nov 2003 (UTC)
- I think the above probably is the most recent discussion on this, although you might want to look at user talk:BuddhaInside as well. Generally, there's no problem with deleting sub-pages, but users are supposed to have a user page and talk page, so the deletion of these would normally occur only on request once someone has left the project. Part of the issue is that user pages are part of the project, so may have some historical value etc. They don't belong to a user as such, so that user should have no right to delete them any more than they can delete any other Wikipedia page. There aren't any definite rules on it, and before BuddhaInside came along, I don't believe it was regarded as much of an issue. Angela 17:54, 11 Nov 2003 (UTC)
I read some of the above, and had a look at the mailing list post, but there's something I may have missed.
On the aims of Wikipedia I see "to create a free encyclopedia". There's nothing about creating an archive for imaginary future archaelogists (from space) to model the development of the project's effect on human knowledge.
Sure it may be interesting, and a nice resource for someone doing their thesis on Wikipedia, but the shouldn't main concern be for the contributers? Privacy is important, so is the ability for them to have some control over the content (and history) of pages labelled with their name (or alias).
No-one is concerned with the deletion of a vanity page from some guy on the internet, so why should a user page of someone equally (or more) insignificant be kept for all eternity?
I'm partially cross-posting to the privacy policy on meta, just to confuse things.

Now I'm confused. I've just come back after months and months and I was about to 'take out my trash' (and delete all my old talkpage stuff) so I could start over afresh and have room for any new comments people wanted to leave me. I don't think that things people said to me when I started contributing two years ago are of any great interest to ANYONE at this point in time! lol Does this mean I'm not allowed to? - Welcome back Karen. I don't think there is currently any agreement on whether such pages should be deleted. The rule was mainly put in to stop BuddhaInside being a nuisance, but the views on m:Draft privacy policy mostly contradict with this. I keep changing my mind about which I prefer, and currently have no strong opinion on whether user/talk pages should be deleted, but whatever is done should be equally allowable for non-sysops.
