Motto[edit]

Is the fact that it's extinct the reason its used for the motto, etc.? - Nik42 04:37, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Probably. The extinct Latin is the most common motto language in the Western world. Also, South Africa has 11 official languages, so if the motto was in one, it would have to have 11. --Taejo 13:25, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Removed sentence; it's not really true...[edit]

It is uncommon for a country to use a motto in a language which is not an official language of that country.^{[citation needed]}

If I were to guess, it seems more common for countries to use mottoes in other languages than the official living language(s). I imagine this is due to 1) avoiding preferencing a single language out of several and 2) because of the certain educated mystique of foreign and/or dead languages.
