Paris Hilton[edit]

Hi Journalist - I edited Paris Hilton's entry today, removing it from the category "Pop Icons". I made my case on the talk page for the article, which was essentially that Paris Hilton's cultural value cannot be said to have extended so far as for her to be considered a pop icon. The category page for Pop Icons states that

"A Pop icon is a celebrity whose popularity (hence, "pop") remains constant or even increases as time goes by. Most celebrities, especially teen idols, exhuast the public's interest with extreme rapidity. A pop icon's celebrity often progresses into legendary status."

As Paris Hilton has only been famous for a couple of years, I did not feel that she belonged in a catergory alongside Marylyn Monroe, James Dean, Ludwig von Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Buddha. So I edited her out - after all, we are told to Be bold. I am a fairly inexperienced Wikipedian, and I may have overstepped some boundaries here, but I would at the same time like to know exactly what the ettiquestte is in a situation like that, where you consider that an article has been put into a category that it doesn't belong in.--Victim Of Fate 17:50, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well she definitely does not belong in the category of Marilyn Monroe or James Dean, but, then again, those people are the world's (or America's) greatest pop icon, so no one can really compare to them. Also, there are some people who are classed as "pop icons", even though they are nowhere near Munroe's status i.e. Britney Spears or Madonna. In this case, then, I think Paris can be classed as such — she is as popular as them →the media loves her. She definitely is a teen idol, and maybe because of this, her status transcends into the pop icon territory. If you are still unconvinced, you can be bold and remove her from the category.
Don't worry, no boundary was overstepped whatsoever. If you feel that the article does not belong, be bold and just remove it, but be sure to provide a rationale on the talk page (like you have done —good job). To tell others that you are going to provide a rationale for your edit, just write "see rationale on talk page" in your edit summary. Thanks for coming to me and sorry for the late reply. Toadfish[edit]

Re: Toadfish, I thought the phrase you added, viz. "tough and street-smart", was POV – at any rate I don't remember him being that way. I'm sorry to do you like that, but I'm sure you can appreciate that changes by unlogged IPs are instantly suspect and frequently vandalistic. Cheers, mgekelly 01:56, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Throughbred racing project[edit]

A number of Wikipedians have come together and formed the WikiProject Throughbred racing to help to expand and better organise information in articles and categories related to the sport of thoroughbred racing. As a past contributor to horse racing articles, we invite you to consider becoming a participant in the project, and/or adding the page to your watchlist so that you become aware, and can join any future horse racing discussions, which may be of interest to you.
