I Believe in a Thing Called Love[edit]

I think that "I believe in a thing called love" reached number 2 in the UK charts rather than number 1.

You are correct according to both their official website and top40-charts.com. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 18:33, Sep 7, 2004 (UTC)

Picture[edit]

We need a new picture, as the one currently up shows the old bassist Frankie Poullain. One showing Richie Edwards in required. William Flowers 17:10, 18 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. I've updated with a promotional photo from the band's official website, starring Richie. Also added some information about their recent UK tour and added a photo from said tour, which I took myself, as well as adding the B-Sides of each single to the singles table. I will also at a later date much expand this article with a lot more detailed information that I know. Mark 20:33, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removed[edit]

"Ticket sales were less than spectacular, yet in the Darkness' style the band were unfazed and put on a string of excellent shows which were met with high acclaim from the critics and fans. The band delighted audiences with incidents like Justin arriving, during the song Knockers, upon an elevated pair of breasts, which is similar to the infamous tiger incident from the last tour. During the track Bald, Justin would once again take to the skys with just his guitar and fly above the crowd, whilst still playing his electric guitar. These incidents, elaborate stage sets and perfect performances show that The Darkness may not be riding on the same wave of popularity as they were in 2003 as they have failed to do anything different on their new tour."

This reads like a review of the tour, and a POV one at that. exolon 14:11, 19 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Tribute Bands[edit]

Is this really the forum to put links to tribute bands websites? Are we supposed to be advertising second rate copies? Megamanic 08:12, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chart Positions[edit]

"The album debuted at number 11, and dropped 21 places to number 34" (From the History section, talking about the second album, One Way Ticket to Hell... And Back)

This doesn't add up (21 places down from 11 would be 32, not 34) and I'm having some difficulty finding out which of the numbers is the wrong one. Anyone help? Jokeslayer 11:06, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Singles[edit]

Why does the singles table come at the bottom of the article? Accoring to the code, it should be under where it says 'singles', but it just isn't. Can anyone fix this? Jonnyrider 22:46, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm wondering why the "B-Sides" section was removed. And the singles section has some weird coloring on it. People should discuss this in the boards instead of changing it around all willy-nilly. --Pepsidude (talk) 21:10, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dropped?[edit]

Any links to backup the claim they've been dropped by the label? - bands web site claims this is false. popbitch doesn't count as a reliable source ;-) --born against 14:39, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe they mentioned they were given the go ahead to start recording their third album by the company. This is a message from the band: "A message from the band After Justin saw a doctor last week and was recommended to “cancel all professional commitments or work-related activities”, we had little choice but to cancel the band’s appearance at the Skanderborg Festival in Denmark, something that the band hate to do, but having been out on the road constantly for such a long time and having not had any time off over the past three years, that’s what Justin has decided to do and we are all agreed that his health must come first.

As everybody found out today, Justin has been admitted to a rehabilitation clinic. We would however like to make it clear that this emphatically does not signal the end for The Darkness, nor are their label Atlantic Records considering ‘dropping’ them. On the contrary they have taken up their option with the band and are looking forward to releasing The Darkness' third album in early 2007.

We are not here to comment on Justin’s private life – or anyone else’s for that matter – but he is feeling better already and as soon as he is ready we will be going straight into the studio to begin recording album number 3.

We hope you would join us in wishing Justin well – and it is for you to judge if a platinum album, headlining and co-headlining sold out shows across the UK, Continental Europe and Australia, etc. to an audience of tens of thousands of adoring fans can ever be considered a failure!

Dan, Ed and Richie x" taken from the news section of their website http://www.thedarknessrock.com/news/red

Stuff I removed[edit]

===Justins Exit===
On the 11th of October the band announced that their legendary front man would no longer be continuing on with them, at this point while still in shock the band has not made a decision on their future.

Very POV, poorly worded, unsourced, already mentioned and referenced in History. Feel free to add it back if you have good cause.

Permission To Land Section[edit]

The section on Permission To Land was wiped and someone had just typed over 'Great Album', I have since wiped this and copied stuff from the actual wikipedia link of 'Permission To Land' but I advise that it be defauled back to what it was originally, Just thought you might want to know Wikipedia, Keep up the great work ;)

Before Darkness[edit]

Where any of the members of the Darkness in any groups prior to forming the Darkness? If they were, what bands were they in? Snowman 17:19, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

They all were, but none of them were notable. I'm getting this list from Permission to Rock a Darkness biography: (in rough chronological order)

Justin:

  • Biff
  • Bionic Reg
  • Father Mahunga/Treefrog
  • Lung Nugget
  • Fish Logic
  • From Their Heads Came
  • Empire

Dan:

Ed:

  • Superfuzz Bigmuff
  • Q*Sling

Frankie:

  • Empire

Ritchie:

  • Onion Trump (formed with other members of The Darkness' road crew)

Although, at best they did a few gigs and recorded a couple of songs, so no really notable bands here. I'll leave it up to you if you want to put any of them in the article. --Mark (Talk | Contribs | Email) 17:13, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Toby MacFarlaine or Toby McFarland?[edit]

The news reports say that The Darkness have added Toby McFarland to their band. However the MySpace page http://www.myspace.com/reunionsquare is for a person named Toby MacFarlaine. Note that three of his top friends are Richie Edwards, Dan Hawkins and Ed Graham. Which name should be present on the Wikipedia page? I went ahead and added Toby McFarland but now I'm thinking it's wrong. To be honest, I was uneasy adding the citation to the news somebody added to the page previously - the band seemed to be disappointed with the news of Justin Hawkins' departing being reported in the papers before they had a chance to release the information themselves. Without a media release from The Darkness, are the sources reliable enough for this to be displayed and for McFarland or MacFarlaine to be added as a current member? ViifogTalk 04:57, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Gawd, I don't know. There are 3 options, I'm going to do some evidence for each one here.
Name Google Results Other
Toby McFarland 168 [1] -Vast majority of news reports use this name.
Toby McFarlaine 2 [2]
Toby MacFarlaine 41 [3] -Some news reports use this name.
-Reunion Square's website and Myspace use this name. As does Thirteen:13's.

In conclusion, I guess that Toby MacFarlaine is the right one. McFarlaine must just be a spelling mistake (or possible alternate spelling). I'm going to correct the article, and move Toby McFarlaine to Toby MacFarlaine. Please, argue with me if you think I'm wrong. --Mark (Talk | Contribs | Email) 21:53, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion[edit]

is justin leaving the group permanantly?????

or is he just leaving temorarily for rehab????Jimmypop1994 05:00, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As of now, the article is correct. Justin has left, but may or may not have hinted he may want to rejoin in a while, when he has sorted himself out (however, that could have been a bogus news report). Fwiw, he initially left straight after his rehabilitation was complete...in other words he already has finished rehab. However, now it seems that their lineup is sorted, they may not want him to rejoin. Time will tell...be patient my friend. --Mark (Talk | Contribs | Email) 12:05, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it's like when John Frusciante left the Red Hot Chili Peppers. After a few years in rehab, he returned. Maybe the same will happen for the Darkness. - 155.143.196.242 11:14, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Correction: the band has indefinitely broken up, and the rest of the members are forming a new group. At first I was thinking along the lines of Pink Floyd (frontman leaves, group continues without him), now I think along the lines of New Order (frontman leaves, group adopts new name and continues without him). - 155.143.196.242 11:14, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One Way Ticket to Hell... And Back[edit]

Aren't they smart?--69.113.131.124 23:26, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Justin is NOT a former member[edit]

Let's get this straight once and for all. When Justin left The Darkness, they ceased to exist. Therefore Justin Hawkins is not a former member; he was always in The Darkness as long as they existed. Is, I don't know, Kurt Kabain listed as a former member of Nirvana? Of course he bloody isn't. Not the best example ever I agree, but the point stands. Hopefully this nonesense will stop when the new band finally get round to announcing their name. U-Mos 12:49, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You just stated, "When Justin left The Darkness". Doesn't that make him a former member?

Justin should have been listed as a former member because the band didn't immediately disband when he left; they kicked around the idea of continuing the band. But there shouldn't be a former members and current members section because, technically, there are no current members of the Darkness, as the band doesn't exist.

Can we describe the band's music...[edit]

The text makes several 'sideways' references to perceptions of The Darkness as a 'joke band' etc., but doesn't actually make any attempt to properly define what their musical approach and philosophy is. It would be good if a sensible and level headed attempt to characterise their music was made that emphasised their songwriting and performing abilities while not denying that their work is often not particularly serious and includes parody and satire. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.105.219.163 (talk) 14:07, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:TheDarkness-OneWayTicket.jpg[edit]

Image:TheDarkness-OneWayTicket.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Billboard Mainstream Rock chart?[edit]

I noticed that a few of The Darkness's singles were shown as having been on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. I follow this chart very closely, in fact I have kept a list of every song to be shown on the published chart since it began, and every chart position every week since 2000. I don't find The Darkness anywhere. I looked especially closely at 2003 and 2004. What was the source of this information? Could it have been a different chart, the Hot 100 maybe?

Members[edit]

To the anon editor - All members are former as the band is defunct. I don't know who this Chris McDouglas guy is supposed to be, but without a reliable source he can't be added as there's no record of him ever being a member. Exxolon 16:08, 2 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I confused his name. It's Chris McDougal, he's mentioned on the offical site. http://www.thedarknessrock.com/gigography/past/01032001.html (88.206.138.195 09:17, 3 December 2007 (UTC)) Rob[reply]

one hit wonder -not exactly...[edit]

I think that it should be noted that the band was extremely short lived and given their popularity during 2003 and 2004, which dropped rather sharply, could they be listed as a sort-of one wonder band? They had a few release from their first album and after that, it went downhill... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.42.196.25 (talk) 16:46, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removing line[edit]

I am removing line 'By late 2004 the band's constant media coverage had started to lead to a general public backlash of antipathy, with the commonly-heard claim that they were no more than a novelty band.' Seems a little weasly/POV unless someone can find a citation to verify this general public backlash. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Calindreams (talkcontribs) 10:48, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Added citation[edit]

Still new to this editing Wikipedia lark... Added citations to back up the #2 position claim for the singles from Permission to land but can't work out how to get rid of the "citation needed" bit. Hope this links are OK.

Reform[edit]

Hot leg played a gig in the Ocean Rooms Brighton where Justin was met by his brother Dan. After much nagging Dan joined him on stage and they played there hit I believe in a thing called love. However confrontation was still evident in the band as Dan whispered to Justin during the performance "you're an absolute c**t". This was confirmed as Justin mentioned it afterwards and proceeding to say " i think he meant it!".

Is it ok if i add this? below is the source http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jptdawJ9yWU

The reference to Chris McDougall (Chris McDougal in Talk) is factually incorrect. In 'Talk' Rob (88.206.138.195 09:17, 3 December 2007 (UTC)) states "he's mentioned on the offical [sic] site. http://www.thedarknessrock.com/gigography/past/01032001.html. No he is not. That is not an official site. It's owned by a casino operator in America that is [mis]using The Darkness to self promote (check out the domain's Whois). There is NO attributable reference to there ever being a Chris McDougal[l] in the band on any authoritative or official source. The only references to him ever being a member of the band are sites that have simply copied the content of this Wiki page. I strongly suggest the reference to Chris McDougall (Chris McDougal) is removed. Graham (Old Guit)
