An "ark" is a ship without a rudder that generally drifts or uses sails only.

The word "ark" has been commonly used in modern times to describe genetic databases, in particular to ensure against exctinct species' being lost genetically. This is an interpretation obviously derived from Noah's Ark.

It is used less commonly to mean any ecological sanctuary or oasis that has special protections.

These latter usages are obviously more culturally neutral than the 1897 definition, so I believe we should move this article to "Noah's Ark" and include some of the usage above in a more generic article.

Blatant bias from Sunday Schools![edit]

...and Eldorado is the city made of pure gold. Except that neither exist! It is stupid to pretend that the ark is real, a vessel large enough tohold specimen of all animal races of the earth would be impossibly large to engineer even today, and so the above quoted sentence as a statement is misleading. 195.70.32.136 10:41, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
