I can't find the discussion I was referring too. I may have been concerned about place names from indigenous languages such as Mi'kmaq, which is both a Native American tribe of the United States and one of the First Nations of Canada. Goustien (talk) 21:50, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support move from 'aboriginal', "Native American" is academic phrasing and as such not deemed offensive, though some folks prefer "Indigenous." The Canadian First Nations seem to be OK with "aboriginal" as a generic word, though it's controversial even there, but in the USA,"aboriginal" is definitely not a preferred term. If we are talking USA and Canada together, then "indigenous" would be better, as Canadian tribal people generally are not fond of "Native American". But if just USA, then Native American is OK.     • Thanks, Montanabw. In Australia, the term aboriginal is preferred (even when used as a noun... despite what our article and some of the references it cites say! But aboriginal person is OK, just don't expect an aboriginal person to necessarily use it), while the term aborigine is considered offensive (they got that right). But this !vote does not help in deciding exactly what the title of this article should be, and the closer will need to decide that if this move is to go ahead.
