What is gradient?

Is tunnel straight?

Did tunnel get wet and slippery?

Duplication of tunnel[edit]

Presumably the tunnel was known to be a rathole tunnel in single line days.

If so, why wasn't the problem fixed when the second tunnel was built?

The second tunnel could have had a large diameter.

The second tunnel could have been a double track tunnel.

The second tunnel might have been arranged to have a downhill slope?
