Game guide?[edit]

Wikipedia is not Gamefaqs or a place for reprinting instruction manuals. We do not need all this information that describes all the nations and buildings and wonders and everything in the game in great detail. I propose drastically trimming this article so it has general information about the game in a readable and concise format. The demiurge 22:55, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well if you do propose it, why dont you try improving it instead of complaining? (Shokwaav 09:15, 4 October 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Expand[edit]

Perhaps we can expand this article, each wonder having it's own page as it applys to RON, each civ, and so on, kinda like what they have on the Star Wars wiki?-OCT. 28th

Firstly, the game has eight ages to advance through, rather than the typical four.

Don't forget Empire Earth which has 14 (15 if counting expansion) ages.

Weaponry ranges across these ages from simple bows and spears to tanks, airplanes, and missiles.

Again, not a first. SYSS Mouse 12:56, 22 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Well, such articles are usually deleted, for obvious reassons of how important is the information to begin with. I do not aprove any of the Star Wars 20000 little articles, but they have a large group of fans that bend the rule just because they are outvote every deletion voting, even though when the voting is for legitimate reassons (also see World of Warcraft for a HUGE list of articles that have no reasson to exist here).

Another way to expand this article would be to include a section on how critics received the game (as many games have). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.110.1.133 (talk) 21:14, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

clan part necessary?[edit]

well?

-More is better, right? But I think RoN is unique amongst most RTS in that there have been a small (low double digits, never more) number of clans that have been around at any time, and in having again, a low double digits number of tournaments, that have really been the only defining competition, and that history is kinda summarizable in a few paragraphs.

actually no, more is NOT better here, more is not better anywhere. OPTIMAL information is what we look for here, not quantity of information.

clan part[edit]

I also don't think the clan and player listing is really neccesary, it should at least be cut down. Tournament winners might be okay to leave in, but most of that section feels more like a group of "shout outs" that have little interest or meaning the vast majority of readers.

  • I agree. Even Counter-Strike doesn't have the amount of information about teams and competition play this article does. In general, I think this article has a lot of junk in it, such as the lists of technologies and cheat codes. Let's just link to GameFaqs for that sort of information. The demiurge 17:32, 6 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CTW part[edit]

Shouldn't the "extensive information" concerning the CTW campaigns which are in Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots be in the Thrones and Patriots page? - InGenX

I agree, this article is just about the original game. Rshu 12:42, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

multiplayer pov issues[edit]

So, this is the second time I've removed this blurb, because, as I noted in my edit summary on august 11th, because it reads like criticism of gamespy, which doesn't have a place in the RoN article, seeing as we could then add this to any game that uses gamespy services. Also, the phrases about "interface is known," or players are "constantly confronted," etc sounds like original research, something not permitted anyway. Changing to "error-prone," while somewhat better, doesn't change the net result of this section, and I'd definitely figure that someone just really hates gamespy, seeing as they misleadingly link to the criticism article about gamespy rather than the gamespy article itself when placing a link for more info on gamespy. Additionally, "grandeur" probably isn't appropriate, either. russ. 16:14, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ps: the below portion is the original jazz, so's others can read and consider it for themselves.

"On its multiplayer standpoint, Rise of Nations has been plagued by connectivity issues on the error-prone Gamespy matchmaking services. The interface is known to be sticky and unresponsive, frequently causing the game to lock up. Players are constantly confronted with screens that display "Connecting..." for an indefinite amount of time. The host may also randomly drop from created rooms for no apparent reason. There is also no support from Gamespy for any of these problems. Players may have to spend at least 10 minutes fighting the Gamespy servers for a successful game to begin. Lock-ups can occur at any part of the game setup process.

For these reasons, Rise of Nations has not been able to garner a widespread online community for a game of its grandeur and critical acclaim.

See also for more information about Gamespy matchmaking services."

Big Cleanup[edit]

This article's been sitting around gaining "fat" long enough. I've removed a substantial chunk out of the article for the following reasons:

  • Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a game guide. That's what StrategyWiki is for (and is linked to in External links anyway).
  • Most of the information is taken straight out of the manual.
  • The information contained too much detail that is unhelpful to the average reader. The article should contain information on what the game is rather than how to play it.

I've completed the first stage of the cleanup by removing the sections that are obviously technical fillers. The existing sections need to be restructured and/or rewritten to provide more informative details on gameplay features and include the essentials of some of the removed sections. --Scottie theNerd 07:01, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also keep in mind that this article is about the original Rise of Nations. Information pertaining to additions and changes made in the expansion should be kept to Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots. --Scottie theNerd 07:04, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vista[edit]

Vista support?

You cant load saved games on vista on the original version (not sure about expansion). Have reported to microsoft and they said they dont support vista. Remove claim of vista support and add to bugs section? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.36.93.46 (talk) 19:11, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unknown about support for Vista however known that Rise of Nations will work on a Vista Computer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by BronzeSilvGold (talkcontribs) 18:35, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bug[edit]

Khalidkhoso 09:33, 31 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there are loads of bugs in the game, but if you can find references online, that would help.

Tournaments and Rankings[edit]

I've added an "importance" tag to this section. I for one don't see how that section meets the requirements of WP:N. Robotman1974 04:26, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Rise of Nations box cover.jpg[edit]

Image:Rise of Nations box cover.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

NPOV tag[edit]

I've added the NPOV tag because the multiplayer POV concerns addressed above have still not been addressed. Littleteddy... keep me in a good mood 14:31, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nations-section is just wrong[edit]

The article has a major flaw in the Nation-section, that is supposed to describe the "special abilities" of the games nations. Maybe the intension was originally to create valid information about those abilities, but in the current article the links refer to actual ideas in real life. The Aztecs may hold the Power of Sacrifice, but I don't think that has anything to do with the actual idea of sacrifice, at least in a sense that needs an interlink to another Wikipedia article. RedJimi (talk) 17:48, 28 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. It should list exactly what the wonder does. Dream Focus 22:20, 13 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Do I buy it or is it free?[edit]

What is the single most important question about this and all other computer games? It's cost. Many, and not just kids, will not consider investing time researching or even playing a game if it's costly. So, up-front, I think we should identify which of the three major categories this game fits in: free forever, free basic edition with expanded edition for sale, or for purchase only. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ertdfgcvb (talkcontribs) 03:16, 22 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Will Rise Of Nations Roblox get an article?[edit]

I hope so 2600:4040:5327:CA00:C0ED:2237:812B:28B (talk) 23:41, 26 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The game doesn't seem notable against Wikipedia's notability guidelines, and it also isn't related to this 2003 game. If there is some good coverage by secondary sources about the Roblox game, then it is definitely something that could be made into an article! But I can't find much at the moment.
