Units[edit]

is the density per square mile or per square kilometre? Kingturtle 17:16, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

The density is per kilometre. Will put units in now.Afn 15:54, 12 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

N.I. population[edit]

Where do the population figures for the six Northern ireland counties come from? As far as I'm aware there are no census figures compiled for the counties since the 1971 census. Lozleader 12:10, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The figures are still collected but aren't readily available. To find the figures you have to add together all the councils areas entirely that lie entirely within one county and add any excess areas from neighbouring council areas that also form part of the county. The census figures can be broken down into Census Output Areas throughout northern Ireland and so, whilst one cannot be completely accurate, one can be relatively sure of an approximate figure, give or take a few hundred (as the afore mentioned Census Output Areas tend to have populations of circa 200-250 persons). Inclusion of non-traditional counties of Republic of Ireland[edit]

I have reverted the replacement of County Down with County Fingal. The 6 traditional counties of Northern Ireland have been included in the list. The newer administrative counties of the Republic of Ireland have not yet been included in this list. Ossory 17:39, 12 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Should the population of city councils be included?[edit]

I find it odd that the population of e.g. County Galway excludes Galway City. Surely most people looking for this kind of page would want the value to be inclusive? Regardless, the references have to be moved, probably to the top of the table, as they're ruining the numerical sorting, and that's the one thing a table like this really should be able to do! 80 Ursae Majoris (talk) 21:21, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, the references. Thank you, I was wondering what was casuing the problem. Anyway, I've fixed the list to include only counties. I have linked the list of town and city populations in the notes. --Ire2500 (talk) 05:19, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

City Councils[edit]

This is a list of counties by population, people come here to see county populations. Stop removing city populations from the list, we've been through this before. --Ire2500 (talk) 13:25, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I entirely agree that as this article is a list of counties by population then only the populations of Irish counties should be listed. Populations not related to those counties should therefore be excluded (or put into footnotes). It is for this reason that the populations of the cities should be excluded. The area of the city is distinct from the area of the county that surrounds them. That's why the CSO lists them separately. If the list was about the popolations of the counties prior to the re-organisation of counties in Ireland (the so-called traditional counties), them the article and scope should reflect that historic definition and make it clear that it does not reflect current realities. Laurel Lodged (talk) 22:00, 1 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think its already made clear that some counties no longer have function, besides CSO also lists full county populations, such as this [1] I just don't see the need to remove them, its not like its a list of county councils by popualtion. We already have the non-traditional counties on list, and a list of cities by popualtion. If we remove the city population from the total, then what we don't have is a list of the traditional counties by population, which, although you may not agree, is what most people are probably looking for. As you may have noticed someone already came looking for the total county populations, with city councils included, because nobody comes to this list expecting to see figures like Galway 10th, Waterford 28th.--Ire2500 (talk) 21:53, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re "some counties no longer have function". That's not the issue. Most of the counties listed have function. That's not the reason for adjusting their populations. The issue is that the terretory of 5 of those counties has been reduced in size by the extent of their eponymous cities. They are physically smaller. Therefore their populations are smaller. Also, it has nothing to do with coounty councils. It is about legal demarkated units of land. And for some counties, they got smaller. Laurel Lodged (talk) 22:09, 2 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Changes since previous census is misleading[edit]

At first glance, it is hard to understand how the total 'Change since previous census' figure for Ireland (15.48%) is greater than any county listed. What it actually happening, is RoI counties are comparing 2006 census with 2011 census and NI counties comparing 2001 with 2011. Ireland total is comparing 2001 with 2011. This column is not comparing 'like with like'. Should this be made clearer? 86.1.59.22 (talk) 21:07, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Derry[edit]

There is no county LondonDerry this is just some unionist troll being the usual prick. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8084:2163:2300:A1C9:8CC1:2464:19F3 (talk) 14:54, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Evidence, reliable references and official record proves otherwise I'm afraid. It's County Derry that has never been a county and is simply a colloquial name for County Londonderry. See County Londonderry for the references and background information. Canterbury Tail talk 17:38, 21 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
