Porcelain phobia source[edit]

Guybrush mentions an unexplained fear of porcelain. This phobia may be a humorous reference to Indiana Jones' fear of snakes. It is believed it originates after a fight he had with the Sheriff, back in the first game (where he used a porcelain vase which eventually smashed). Okay. I remember the fight with Fester Shinetop that happened offscreen. I remember lots of stuff happening, including a vase getting smashed. I do not remember it specifically mentioning that the vase was porcelain; and I do not understand how that could lead to a fear of porcelain. "It is believed" shows that nobody knows for sure, but that could be a possibility. And for the vase's material : if it was smashed, it is probably not made of metal, so it leaves Glass, Porcelain and other stuff, but if it was exposed in a 16th (or is it 17th) century manor, chances are that it indeed was porcelain. I've heard from fan(atic)s that there was a LucasArts newsletter or something containing a MI comic, where LeChuck turned Guybrush into a porcelain statue.
A (now dead) famous French humorist from the late 70s-early 80s, Pierre Desproges, mentions in his '86 stand-up that he is "afraid of porcelain" (he was born in Limoges, which is famous for its porcelain ; he concludes: "You must have lived in Limoges to understand."). The phobia comes from the 3rd game whenever you try to interact with a porcelain object, Guybrush acts repulsed, says he hates porcelain and that it's a long story.24.190.34.219 (talk) 02:54, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Age[edit]

On another note, the article mentions Guybrush being trapped for five years in the Carnival of the Damned. This doesn't fit at all with the timeline we know, or Guybrush's age, but I'm not familiar with EMI. --Kizor 12:44, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure about the comic. I remember Sam & Max comics in the newsletter, but none about the statue mentioned. But the five years -- I believe that comes from the opening narration in CMI. Guybrush is drifting in the Caribbean in a carnival bumper-car, writing in a journal (which is also read in voiceover). If I'm not mistaken, and I probably am, Guybrush mentions that he was trapped for five years. Anyone have the game handy to verify? -DynSkeet (talk) 13:33, July 22, 2005 (UTC)
I had the game handy. Playing the adventure games of your non-English-native youth always gives a weird feeling when you can now understand everything... but no, there was nothing of the sort in the intro. Also, near the endgame Guybrush is shown to be twenty, and in MI2 (which I memorised as a pre-teen) Guybrush is 19. --Kizor 16:42, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Although I don't remember the exact point, I am pretty sure it's mentioned in the game, somewhere. And I remember that because the number five stroke me, realising it was the number of the years after MI2, trying to establish some real-time continuity. Monkey Island has never had a very well established canon to begin with and almost all timeline seculation can be considered redundant as they have a tendency of being retconned in later games. In other words it makes little difference.

He's 17 in SoMI, 19 in MI 2, 20 in MI 3... Tales takes place 10 years since he became a pirate making him 27 maybe 28.24.190.34.219 (talk) 03:37, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Looks[edit]

It would be great to examine the visual appearance of Guybrush more, particularly the differences between his looks throughout the series. Should we upload more pictures of him? - Sylph

Inspiration References[edit]

I do not see any corelation with Will Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean, or John Dorian from Scrubs.

The only similarities with Will Turner would be that they are both pirates. Theres really nothing linking them at all. This reference should be removed, or at least some support evidence should be listed.

Now although the article ties Guybrush in with John Dorain, it only lists differences. Unless the similaries are: they both dislike an object, they both have a favorite drink, and they both have an enemy. Im pretty sure that would link pretty much any character anywhere to John Dorian. Again this reference should be removed, or some actual evidence should be presented.

Carnival destroyed[edit]

In EfMI Murray clearly states that LeChuck destroyed the carnival after being released by Ozzie. Guybrush only blows up a section of the Roller-Coaster of Death burrying LeChuck. TheHande 21:15, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

5 years?[edit]

From the article:

At the beginning of CMI, Guybrush definitively states that he was imprisoned by his arch enemy LeChuck for five years

Okay, I'm dying to know where in the beginning does it state that. To make sure there are no misunderstandings I'll quote the prologue of the game word-for-word:

Captain's log, Guybrush Threepwood.
Lost at sea for days now. I have no crew or navigational equipment. No provisions except a half-eaten corndog, and unless I find water soon I'll surely be done for. Only the hope of finding my love Elaine keeps me going. My quest for the fabulous treasure of Big Whoop is what has left me in this sorry state. I thought it would bring me fame and glory. Instead it lead me into the glutches of my enemy, the Zombie Pirate LeChuck. I thwarted his evil plan to marry Elaine and he was after revenge.
I'm really thirsty now. If I could only find some fresh water, I'd might have the strength to sail on. But I know there's nothing but ocean for miles and miles. If I could reach land I might some food... fruit maybe, something to fight off the scurvy and help me get my strength back.
Oh! Why do I torture myself like this. I might as well wish for some chicken and a big mug of grog for all the good it'll do me. Oh, my sweet Elaine. Am I forced to starve on this ocean, without seeing your face just one more time, am I...

Appearance in LOEG?[edit]

I've removed it. For reference, the text is:

It is speculated that Guybrush Threepwood was one of the pirates to attend a The Pirates' Conference, circa 1775, as shown in the second volume of the graphic novel The World of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

There are several problems with this:

  1. "It is speculated" -- who speculates? This is from a fan website about the LOEG, and the claim is attributed to one "Nevin." Sorry, that's just random Internet gossipo.
  2. More importantly, what similarity? Compare the two pictures on the very page: [1] [2]. I don't see any similarity whatsoever -- one is a stoic, mature older figure, while Guybrush is young, naive, often cheerful, and awkward-looking.
  3. In general, an encyclopedia is not the place for speculation, even if it is sourced to external websites and blogs.

This is completely out of place in the article and should not be restored unless there's some authoritative source that actually confirms any kind of association.--Eloquence* 07:29, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Character Death[edit]

Doesn't Guybrush also die in Monkey Island 2 when left underwater for 10 minutes? At some point in the game, he needs to dive in order to recover an object. Nikos

Back in the days, I was geek enough to check. He just yells (underwater - just go with it) that he's drowning and swims back up. He's forced to dump the monkey head that's weighing him down, but not tied to him. --Kizor 19:58, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Porcelain in MI 2[edit]

Was the reference to porcelain in Monkey Island 2 removed because it doesn't seem to fit with the current article, or was it removed because there is doubt to its authenticity? I'm just wondering, because I felt it was an interesting piece of information within the whole Guybrush-afraid-of-porcelain theme that appears in the later games. Age is all wrong especially in the Tales section...[edit]

The Tales section currently says he's in his thirties. However, as it takes place ten years after he became a pirate AND moderators in the TellTale forums said he's in his late 20's, the info currently in the article completely wrong.

Guybrush is 17 in SoMi. He is 19 in MI 2.

I don't remember for Curse or Escape.

Tales says it takes place 10 years since he became a pirate so therefore he is 27 or 28 depending on how exact it is.

Name Origin[edit]

Dave Grossman just made an interesting post on the Telltale Games forums. I'm not really sure how to write it into the existing article, though.

For the obsessively detail-oriented among you: The DPaint extension for brush files was .bbm (remember that file extensions could only be three letters in those days). For the record the article has already been edited to cite this information. If anybody feels impressed to take a crack at revising the wordage feel free (this is after all Wikipedia). Age in SoMI[edit]

What is the source for Guybrush being 17 in SoMI? The article explains the evidence for him being 19 in Revenge, 20 in Curse, and about ten years older than when he met Elaine in Tales.
