Though it is an international airport, the airport is officially called "Brussels National Airport".

I'd prefer Brussels Airport as that seems to be the one that the official website uses. violet/riga (t) 23:44, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

"Brussels Airport" or "L'aéroport de Bruxelles" was how I remember it. I don't recall if it was called Zaventem Airport (signposts?). --Pelladon 22:13, 5 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Brussels Airport[edit]

On 19 October 2006, the airport was officially named "Brussels Airport". Prior to this date, there were many accepted names. In Brussels, Brussels National Airport (and it's French and Dutch versions) was favoured, while in Flanders, Zaventem Airport was favoured. Future Airlines Topic[edit]

I believe it's a contribution to the BRU-article, and also a positive look for the future of BRU! And I wouldn't submit if it was just a couple of rumours, I took it from a file that I downloaded from the Macquarie-site. The section regarding airlines "expected/negotiating to start up/restart service to/from BRU within some time" has been removed from this article. This is speculation at best, and does not belong on an encyclopedic page. Only when a route / airline can be confirmed by a published source can it be added here. Wikipedia is not the place for rumours and a list of airlines / routes many of which may never serve Brussels certainly should not feature on this page, in line with other airport pages. It having been there for more than a month has no relevance to whether it belongs there or not. Please provide a link the PDF file you refer to and we can then discuss it further here. On a certain level, you're right & correct. But it seems you're checking every article once in a while, just to look what's not right. Anyway, I'm gonna look it up on the Mac-site. Getting there?[edit]

As to get more consistency between the articles for airports, wouldn't it be a nice idea to add in a "getting there" section as well? I'm mainly looking at the Brussels South Charleroi Airport page where this is done as well. Glodenox (talk) 21:12, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Airport history[edit]

The origins of Zaventem Airport date back to 1940, when the German occupying force laid claim to 600 hectares (1 hectare = 2.471 acres) of agricultural fields to the east of Brussels. The Germans constructed 3 runways in the shape of a triangle: runway 02/20 and 07L/25R which are still in use today, and runway 12/30. The airfield buildings however were constructed within the territory of the nearby municipality of Melsbroek and not of Zaventem, which is why the airfield was known as the airfield of Melsbroek! After WWII Belgian authorities took posession of this military airfield. They replaced certain installations to allow for civil operations as well. In 1948 the length of runway 02/20 was increased to 1200 meters, of runway 07L/25R to 2450 meters, whereas 12/30 remained at 1300 meters. From 1948 to 1956 many more buildings and facilities were erected, but always on the Melsbroek side of the site. In 1956 a new runway was constructed, the (at that time) 2300 meter long parallel runway 07R/25L, still in use today but later increased to 3200 meters. Also, in april 1956 the Belgian government decided to build a new airport, using the same runways, but with the buildings located within the territory of the municipality of Zaventem. The grass runway 12/30 had to make way to allow for the new passenger terminal. This new airport was inauguarated July 5th 1958, almost just in time for expo58. So historically, the birth date of Zaventem airport is July 5th 1958. Incidentally, the buildings on the Melsbroek side are still in use by the Belgian Airforce (15th Transport Wing), and is still known as Melsbroek airfield. Both (Zaventem airport and the military airfield of Melsbroek) share the same runways. Chocs Away[edit]

All I want is confirmation or refutal (with link to a reputable source) of the airport's oft-quoted reputation as the world's biggest chocolate selling point. Hewa Bora Airways[edit]

Pier/Concourse[edit]

I'm a British citizen (English native speaker, that info is important for this story) resident in Belgium for many years now, and my occupation is translator. Many years ago, I did a fairly big translation from Dutch into English for the then BIAC. After I delivered the translation, the customer invited me to come over to the BIAC office to discuss a few details of my translation. One thing she specifically mentioned was that 'Pier' should more correctly be rendered in English by 'Concourse'. This (very good by the way) Wikipedia article features several instances of 'pier'. At the time of writing I work at this airport as a vendor, and I would recommend against the change to concourse. While you are indeed correct in that from a linguistic perspective 'concourse' is a more correct term, everywhere inside the airport they are just referred to as piers or terminals, even in English.
