In response to your email: You can download a complete copy of the Wikipedia database in MySQL format. I don't know the details personally, but there's a page about it at Wikipedia:Database download. We don't currently have a CD distribution that I know of, but from what I read it seems that the downloadable version is intended for research like what you're proposing. If you have technical questions that aren't answered there, you should talk to one of the developers, probably User:Brion VIBBER.

I haven't heard of anyone doing statistical analysis of the sort you mentioned on our database, but it's possible that someone's already done some work along those lines. If you're going to start doing research of this sort, you should probably post a message to the Village pump letting people know, so any interested parties can get in touch with you.

I suggest posting your concerns about the optimization articles on Talk:Optimization (mathematics). There are plenty of math and computer science people here, and you might want to solicit some general opinion and some help. If noone responds after a day or two, just go ahead and do the work yourself. Shape the articles however you think they should be. See Wikipedia:Be bold in editing. Don't worry too much about making mistakes, as there are plenty of veterans who can clean up any details. You can ask me if you have any questions about how to do something.
