This article was nominated for deletion on March 20, 2007. The result of the discussion was NO CONSENSUS TO DELETE.

The thing we'll need to distinguish on this page is that there are two kinds of failed bids. There are the "applicant cities", and then the "candidate cities" (usually ~5). -Plutor 16:16, 31 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Two suggestions[edit]

Merge "Russia" with "Soviet Union". I find the distinction confusing for the purpose of this list.
Explain that for many of these cities, there were also successful bids. For example: Montreal; Lake Placid; Lillehammer; Los Angeles; and so forth. A couple of possibilities: put a disclaimer to this effect in the lede, and a proper "see also" for a list of cities that did host the Olympics, or mark * for cities on the list which hosted Olympics in other years.

Thanks for your "kudos". I have taken care of the first issue and am thinking of the best way to handle the second. In addition to your two proposals, I am also considering the options of (1) adding a "Notes" column to the tables, (2) adding a "Notes" section at the bottom of the page, and (3) color-coding individual rows. The third option is the fanciest but may also be distracting. Anyway, I'll modify the page more in the coming days and will also do a search for additional sources ... if nothing else, they're needed to double-check the accuracy of the information. List of cities that have not hosted the Olympic Games[edit]

The link List of cities that have not hosted the Olympic Games redirects to this page. However, this is a misnomer, since my idea of "not hosting the Olympic Games" is that a city has indeed never hosted the Games in its history. Cities that may have failed in bids to host the Olympics may have still ended up hosting the Olympics, as in the case of Athens and Beijing. Hence, failing to win a bid is not the same as not hosting the Olympic Games at all. Either we can correct the links, or make a color coding scheme to indicate which cities on this page's list were able to host the Olympics. Thanks. Joey80 02:56, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The problem with a list of cities that have not hosted the Olympic Games is that almost every city in the world meets that criterion. Which is why the article was moved from that title to this one; the redirect is an artifact of the move and shouldn't be taken to have any real meaning regarding the contents of this list. That being said, it would be nice to have an indication of which of the cities in the list have also had successful bids.
