I wonder if a better translation for "renseignements" in this context might be "intelligence" rather than "information". And a better description of its functions (in English) is "gathering of domestic intelligence", not "gathering of information". See, for example, the description of its functions in http://www.fas.org/irp/world/france/interieur/rg/index.html. Of course, it is not the only domestic intelligence agency.
