Move to 'Russian oligarchs'? =[edit]

I was redirected here from 'Russian oligarch' and thought I had landed on the wrong page (bad redirect maybe). But then I saw the article is about the Russian oligarchs. So why isn't is called that? 'Business oligarch' is too broad a term and could in the future be used as such. Better to move the page now before too many other pages link here, causing confusion. I would leave the title. As time goes on we see the same behaviour in practically all countries. The Rajapaksa family in Sri Lanka would be a family of oligarchs. In Australia we have mining magnates Gina Rinehart and Clive Palmer, as well as the retail property magnates Lowy family. They are all mega-rich and influence politics. Rinehart through funding a think tank, Clive Palmer with a political party that gained one Senate seat after spending 100 million AUD, and Lowy through the Lowy Institute involved in international policy development. Russian Oligarchs are not openly involved in politics, that is the only difference. 1. "Russian Oligarchs" page - I totally agree that this should be its own page. I don't believe that the term "business oligarch" has ever really been used outside the former Soviet Union, and its current usage vastly overshadows any general usage that may have existed before. My deletion of large text[edit]

To my knowledge, the term "(business) oligarch" has been an exclusively post-Soviet phenomemnon. Not without similarities to other countries, but also with unique history and circumstances: lightning-fast (in historical scale) robbing a huge country into private hands of few.

Hmm well, there do exist blue-chip RS such as The Hill and The Guardian that refer to certain American billionaires as oligarchs.

As currently written, a Template:Globalize tag wouldn’t be appropriate (content is already generic) but I agree that more content and TP discussion is warranted. RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 05:09, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

An "Oligarch" is a member of an "Oligarchy". Has nothing to do with "Business" or being a "Business Magnate".[edit]
