Jyutping

Hi Shoujun. I just noticed that you added content to the jyutping article. Thank you. That article has been in need of content for quite some time. I've been wanting to do it, but I never had the time. So thanks for your contribution. There is just one thing though. Some of the text doesn't appear correctly in my browser. For example, this line: The letters eo and oe represent the pronunciations /ɵ/ and /œː/, respectively, in Jyutping while the letters eu represent both pronunciations in Yale. I wrote IPA symbols, which are also in other romanization articles (such as pinyin). They don't appear properly on your browser because most likely you don't have IPA fonts installed. The IPA in Unicode article has some info about it, but it's not a whole lot. I can help you out though. What operating system and browser are you using? — Shoujun 20:56, Jan 25, 2005 (UTC)

I was thinking that it was IPA symbols. I wish I knew how to read IPA symbols. It seems very hard to learn. I just read the IPA article, but I'm unfamiliar with most of the technical terminology. Hi Shoujun. I'm new to wikipedia too. Although I prefer to read replies to my messages on the same page that I left them, I noticed that other people reply to messages on the talk page of the person who wrote the message. I only mention this because I noticed that you replied to ran (below) on this page. I think that if you reply on ran's talk page, there will be a greater chance of him receiving your reply to his message. Otherwise, he might not notice it until the next time he wants to leave a message on your talk page. Unless, of course, he has added your talk page to his watch list. But I don't think most people do that. (except for me.) By the way. I can see the IPA characters on the jyutping article now. Thank you. --Wang123 08:18, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hong Kong

I've reverted your changes to Hong Kong. I don't see what the IPA template adds; also, tone numbers are usually put in the superscript while tone contours are put in the subscript. -- ran (talk) 03:29, Jan 28, 2005 (UTC)

Here's an excerpt from Template talk:IPA of what the IPA template does: "Template:IPA fixes broken display of International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) characters in MS Internet Explorer 6 for Windows. In other web browsers, it doesn't affect font display at all. It also allows all registered Wikipedia users to specify styles for IPA text by editing their monobook.css style sheet." — Shoujun 04:33, Jan 28, 2005 (UTC)

I've compared both versions of the Hong Kong article. The IPA template allows me to view the IPA symbols on my home computer. The previous version by Olivier doesn't show the IPA symbols correctly on my computer. I'm going to re-add the IPA catagory, but I'm going to take into account ran's statement that tone numbers go in the superscript. Please correct me if this is incorrect.
