Readers,

Usher does not in any way condone this page or check its contents. Do not leave messages here, as there is absolutely no chance that he will ever read them or respond. If you feel that the corresponding article could be improved in some way, or if you have any questions about how you can improve this article, you may leave a message here. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TUF-KAT (talkcontribs) 02:25, 10 November 2004 (UTC)

A friend of mine living in Dallas, Texas informed me that Usher was actually born there, and moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee very early on. He says he had a look at a copy of Usher's birth certificate, and knows which hospital in Dallas he was born at (forgot the name). How true is this information? --FuriousFreddy 01:01, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

How Did He?

How did he see Usher's Certificate?

I think it was on public record or something, accesible through a website. I'll ask him about it later tonight. --FuriousFreddy 00:36, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Well If he is a good friend he shouldn't be lying to you

Birth

If it can't be confirmed where Usher was born, it should just be left at Chattanooga, Tennessee. Phoenix2 22:24, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I think it says Usher was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on his website.

Article name

Usher publishes all his songs under the name "Usher". This article should be moved to Usher (singer) (or Usher (entertainer), to account for his side acting career), in keeping with the Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names). For precedence, see Madonna (entertainer), Jewel (singer), Jem (singer), Dido (singer), Bill Clinton, Eminem, etc. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 19:14, August 17, 2005 (UTC)

...but Usher's acting has always been credited to Usher Raymond. In the case of Mario Barrett, it's either or, but in the case of Usher, he should stay at Usher Raymond where he belongs. --FuriousFreddy 19:41, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
Hmm. As he's better known for his musical career than his acting career, and his stage name is Usher, shouldn't that take precedence? I can see your point, but I'd be interested in seeing what other people thought about this. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 20:12, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
I dunno. I'd still say this one should stay where it is. Unlike "Mario Barret" or "Lloyd Whatever-His-Last-Name-Is", "Usher Raymond" is recognizable as identifying the "U Got It Bad" kid. What do you think about Brandy Norwood, Beyoncé Knowles, and (*snicker*) Tenetria Michelle Williams)? --FuriousFreddy 22:06, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
Well, Tenetria Michelle Williams is a redirect to Michelle Williams (singer), which is correct because it's the name under which she publishes solo material. I definitely think that Brandy Norwood should also be moved to Brandy (entertainer), because most people don't even know her last name. --DropDeadGorgias (talk) 12:50, August 18, 2005 (UTC)
Hmm...they must have recently moved Michelle's page; last time I was there it was at Tenetria Michelle Williams. Ah, let's just be bold and get this all over with. --FuriousFreddy 15:05, 18 August 2005 (UTC)

Cleanup

This article needs serious cleanup, from tag fixing to grammatical errors and such. Ohyeahmormons 13:58, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

According to the AOL Music Archive, it's called "Call Me a Mack". Other than that I have no further details. --AndreniW 22:59, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

I'd like to see Usher's page have the release date of his video podcast (and possibly a link to it???) The launch date is the same day as his new album is being released, May 27th. Here is an excerpt: "It's not all VIP's and red carpet events! Learn more about what it takes to be a successful sports and entertainment business leader. Usher's uCast series is designed to expose it's viewers to the behind-the-scenes part of the multi-billion dollar entertainment industry!" Thanks for the consideration! Personal life

Usher is a 2007 Georgia Music Hall of Fame Inductee. He is the youngest person to ever receive this honor. Ray Charles, the first Georgia Hall of Fame Inductee, has stated that this was one of his greatest achievements. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.148.193.138 (talk) 09:09, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

There should be more about Usher's personal life, I believe. Except for a little something about his youth, there is not much info. I wanted to know if the song 'Confessions' was real or not, but I can't find it here.--Soetermans 07:49, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Me too. I always wondered if it was real and he really had a kid or not.
My thoughts exactly.--Soetermans 08:37, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Confessions is not real. He already stated it on 106 & Park a while back that he did it to see how many records he would sell and it was a success. But I did hear that the reason he & Chilli of TLC split is cuz he got caught up in his game w/ ANOTHER MALE. But Chilli said it's something bad but she'd never tell. Unfortunately...it leaked. Who is this other male your talking about.

The article states that Usher attended Hayes Bridge Middle School, but I know for a fact (because I went there too) that he went to Sandy Springs Middle School in Atlanta, Ga. That should be corrected. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.56.61.214 (talk) 02:22, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Location

why is this at Usher (entertainer) instead of Usher (artist) or Usher (singer) ?? if there is no (reasonable) objection then i will move it.. (or someone else can..) ~Bungalowbill

He is also a dancer and an actor. Therefore an entertainer.

You would never know he's a dancer from the article. -- 98.108.195.145 (talk) 07:14, 4 December 2008 (UTC)

He is more than a singer. He entertains. Why do you have a problem with that word?Maersayer (talk) 01:46, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Move?

As per WP:NCP, should this page be moved to Usher Raymond? Though he is commonly known as simply "Usher", only "Usher Raymond" meets the naming conventions. In WP:NCP, it clearly states that the name shall follow the format <first name> <last name> which simply "Usher" does not follow. Please reply if I am misunderstanding the naming conventions. Thanks!
Soliloquial 02:06, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Usher (entertainer)Usher Raymond?

  • I support the proposed move. Few, if any, people are likely to search for him as wiki/Usher (entertainer)... -- Greaser 08:23, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
  • Oppose I believe Usher's situation is just like Madonna. He goes by the one name and it's the most likely term people will use to find him. Granted they have to go through a disambig page first, but so does Madonna. Metros232 13:09, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

Maybe you should make this page just "Usher" and when it loads have under the title, a link to the disambiguation page

Unreleased Albums

I was wondering if we should include Usher's unreleased albums, "Sex Appeal", "And The Winner Is..." and "All About U". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 124.181.105.229 (talk) 01:58, 11 February 2007 (UTC).

US Records

I have merged US Records here because as an independent subject, it is not sufficiently [[WP:N|notable], seems unimportant except in reference to Usher, fits well in this article, and it doesn't seem to be going anywhere to make it worth waiting for more content. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 09:45, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Subjective Language

'truly one of the best artists of this decade' is subjective, and not factual. In addition, there is no mention of which particular decade (to say one of the best of this decade would only be relevant in the 00's and based on his work in that decade) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.40.166.87 (talk) 14:03, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Inducted into Billboard list?

As far as I know, the Billboard list is based on singles sales and do not contain any subjective opinion. So "inducted" hardly seems appropriate - it's just a ranking. 143.89.188.6 (talk) 15:28, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

What on earth is sophomore album? SO WTF has this to do with Albums? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.120.222.220 (talk) 22:10, 5 September 2010 (UTC)

New album..

Due to the (overall) disappointing commercial performance of Here I Stand, Usher is planning to release a new album in early 2009.[64] - A few questions, is the new album coming specifically because the last one had low sales? Second, can we just delete this. We are now into April and there has been no news on a single, let alone a album. Nothing will be released for quite some time it seems. I certainly thing the biography needs to mention the sales of the album (and it's singles) were low by Ushers standards. Not just lower than Confessions but lower than earlier albums too. However it still sold a few million, it wasn't a "flop" realistically. — R2 02:03, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Unclear?

"In 2001, Usher began dating former T.L.C member Rozonda "Chilli" The one who he always wanted to date heer since his child years. Thomas who had previously had a child with producer Dallas Austin, and her son."

Is something wrong with me -- what does this mean? Usher was dating both Chilli and her son? Hrhadam (talk) 20:02, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

"Breakthrough"?

Is it meaningful to talk about "Confessions" as his "breakthrough" album, considering his previous albums were themselves large sellers?

Here's a super popular music giant who lives life relying on all kinds of poele to take care of all his needs. However when it come to show his appreciation hes just full of his own ego thinking being in his presents is better than him show his appreciation with a gratuity! Just a nightmare ruined my whole shift.

Philanthropy

While it is true that Usher served as a mentor for American Idol in March 2010, this was a professional activity. It does not belong under the heading "Philanthropy." It would be more appropriately placed in the "Career" section. 76.26.134.161 (talk) 12:14, 31 March 2010 (UTC)CFK

Questionable sources

There are questionable sources used in this article. If there is anything you wanna say regarding questionable sources than make them here and ill either remove it all together or find a more reliable source. But please do not say the page needs more citations because there's one after almost every sentence. Please add citations to help improve the page. However Ushers page has been reviewed as a good article by the administrators. So please don't add false needs for the page. We shortened the introduction. Have made any necessary changes. Or requested changes that have proven to be accurate. I will check the talk page daily and will make any requested changes but please until the administrators say the page has as many issues as many of you have claimed please don't add anything to the page requesting a check of sources, a shortened introduction, or anything at all. Edit the page and make contributions you feel needed as long as it is NOT vandalism please. Thank you Texasmade2010 (talk) 16:21, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Top singer of the decade

DO NOT remove Usher being named the top singer of the decade. Like for Beyonce who was named the top female artist and diva of the decade Usher was named by Billboard Magazine the top singer of the decade. He is ranked ahead of every other top singer of decade and there is an article congratulating him on being the top singer of the decade. Don't edit it. Thank you.Texasmade2010 (talk) 15:52, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Best or most successful?

Okay I checked and Billboards List of the Billboard Top 200 of the decade wasn't based on album sales. It was ranked in order of the best albums of the decade. Example: They ranked the Eminem Show ahead of the Marshall Mathers LP even though the Marshall Mathers LP sold more and charted longer. Now Artist's of the decade wasn't ranked by success either. They ranked in order the best artist's of the decade. Example: Destinys Child sold more than Usher, Nelly, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, 50 Cent, and so on. But all of the artist ranked ahead of Destiny's Child. Don't edit Confessions being named the best solo album and second best overall album of the decade. Also don't edit Usher being named the best singer and second best artist of decade. I checked, all of the list's for the decade by Billboard Magazine were ranked in order by best not success. Thank you-Texasmade2010 (talk) 10:43, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Billboard uses statistics from chart placements to determine their awards and certifications. It is explicitly stated here that "Billboard's decade-end artist recap ranked the best-performing acts of the past 10 years (from Dec. 4, 1999, to Nov. 28, 2009) based on activity on two charts: the Billboard 200 albums list and the Billboard Hot 100 songs tally."
And for the Billboard 200 list, here at the top, it says "The top-selling albums of the decade (2000-09) across all genres, ranked by sales data as compiled by Nielsen Soundscan." For the artist list, here, it says, "The Top Artists of the Decade ranking is based on artist's chart performance on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart and Billboard 200 albums." Their critics did not give opinions of which singer is better than another. The rank was determined by data about the chart placements of an album or single; it is completely objective.
The Eminem Show may have been ranked higher than The Marshall Matters LP because it stayed longer on the charts and spent more weeks in the top 10 or top 20 or where ever, despite having slower sales.
Also, as a side note, new comments are supposed to be made at the bottom of talk pages, not at the top. Please direct all your comments below mine to ensure for consistency and chronology. Orane (talk) 22:55, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

NPOV/clean-up tag

Is this article for real? The introduction is more biased than the singer's own website. Every sentence is simply a showcase for his achievement. The writing quality is extremely poor, as are the quality of the sources. Article needs a major overhaul. Orane (talk) 05:36, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

If you no longer believe it is GA material, you could have it reassessed? It could certainly do with some work. — R2 12:21, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

This is not an article on Iraq or abortion or religion. Entertainment is based on personal taste, and has intrinsic value, irregardless of what is said about it. So, NPOV is meaningless with regards to artists and entertainers. Art and artists should be celebrated, and if there are six different Wiki pages claiming an artist to be "the number one artist of the decade", then that is just a natural result of people's enthusiasm for something that makes their life more worthwhile. Any specific statement that is factually incorrect should be corrected, but overall positive tone for art and artists is not "NPOV" - those who think so should look up "pedantic" in Wiktionary. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.104.52.80 (talk) 00:53, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Usher (entertainer)Usher

  • Then Usher can have the officiial title of Usher and not Usher (entertainer). EunSoo (talk) 06:12, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
  • The main meaning of Usher is "a doorman". Anthony Appleyard (talk) 06:33, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose per above. Usher has several meanings, and the entertainer is not the primary topic. — ξxplicit 06:38, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Comment per above. It still doesn't make sense because yes Usher is "a doorman" but where is the page for this definition. Usher is still being used as a disambiguation page when disambiguation pages have (disambiguation) at the end. So you might as well use Usher for the musician seeing as Usher (entertainer) can be a last choice. EunSoo (talk) 06:48, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose. No clear primary topic. Per WP:DABNAME disambiguation pages don't have to have "(disambiguation)" at the end of the article name. This is only necessary when there is a clear primary topic, which there isn't in this case. Dpmuk (talk) 13:07, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Comment per Dpmuk - The primary topic is Usher. EunSoo (talk) 14:00, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Sorry but I disagree, I think Usher (occupation) and it's sub articles are the closest to a primary topic but regardless I don't think any topic meets the requirement that it be "much more likely than any other, and more likely than all the others combined" (from WP:PRIMARYTOPIC). Dpmuk (talk) 14:20, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Isn't the primary topic the one with the first definition The main meaning of Usher is "a doorman"?? Ah Usher (occupation) matches the doorman def. then why isn't Usher (occupation) the primary topic? EunSoo (talk) 14:23, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
If you believe that then why are you asking to move the entertainer to that title? As I say I also don't believe any of the topics is a clear primary topic as is required for them to be at the plain title - yes, in my opinion usher (occupation) is the closest to being such a topic but still doesn't meet the requirement I post above. Dpmuk (talk) 14:33, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
  • <edit conflict>Support: Usher the entertainer is clearly the primary topic for this term. "Primary topic" in Wikipedia terms, does not refer to "original meaning" or "common meaning"; it refers to the topic that users are most likely to want when they enter the ambiguous term in the Search window and hit Go. In this case, the disambiguation page was visited about 110,000 times last month; the total page hits for all the other uses combined was less than half that. So even if one assumes that all the visitors to those pages got there by way of the dab page (doubtful), the entertainer's article was the desired destination for a clear majority of users. And a quick sampling of the current incoming links shows that all, or nearly all, of them refer to Usher Raymond. The entertainer should be at the plain title as the primary topic.--ShelfSkewed Talk 14:35, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Bless your heart for explaining that cause I wasn't sure what a primary topic was Shelfshskewed EunSoo (talk) 14:39, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose - Per Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Naming_the_specific_topic_articles this request inappropriately suggests removing/changing a word/phrase in parenthesis used for the disambiguation of an article title that could potentially refer to several subjects. NickCT (talk) 20:54, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
  • A grand example Prince (musician) so why is Rain the entertainer??EunSoo (talk) 03:39, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Before this I had not heard of the entertainer Usher, and he will likely have his time of fame and then go back into the past; but ushers at doors will be around much longer than that. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 04:17, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Omo! Really you didn't know who Usher was. Interesting. You are right Usher won't around long but his work always will. I think he was the first modern music artist to bring back Michael J.'s style of dance and more. EunSoo (talk) 05:30, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose per Dpmuk. Completefailure (talk) 15:11, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose obviously not the primary topic by any standard. —innotata 14:50, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose No clear primary topic. The project is best served by keeping Usher as a disambiguation page. Rejectwater (talk) 22:37, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

{{editsemiprotected}} Please change "Five Killers (2010)" under Filmography to "Killers (2010)" because the name of the film is "Killers", not "Five Killers".

Orphaned references in Usher (entertainer)

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Usher (entertainer)'s orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "Newrelease":

  • From Versus (Usher EP): Concepcion, Mariel (2010-07-08). "Usher Announces New 'Versus' Album, Deluxe Edition". Billboard. Retrieved 2010-07-08. {{cite web}}: Italic or bold markup not allowed in: |work= (help); Unknown parameter |pubisher= ignored (|publisher= suggested) (help)
  • From Raymond v. Raymond: Concepcion, Mariel (2010-07-08). "Usher Announces New 'Versus' Album, Deluxe Edition". Billboard. Nielsen Business Media, Inc. Retrieved 2010-07-08. {{cite web}}: Italic or bold markup not allowed in: |work= (help)

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 22:44, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

Adding chart data

I see how people mind using album sales and single chart positions on Ushers lead section despite them being used frequently on others articles lead sections. Alicia Keys articles tells how much her albums have sold. On Chris Browns article it mentions all his major hits. So please they should be allowed on Ushers lead section as well. The lead is also suppose to show the major successes of an artist. Whether it be singles or albums as a whole. I'm aware Usher has achieved a lot more success than almost any other artist of his generation so it takes up more space than usual but still I feel it should be included. Please discuss this here on the talk page. Thank you-Melody Prince$$ (talk) 11:56, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

OMG Tour

Will a page be made for his upcoming OMG Tour. Tickets are already on sale.calvin999 (talk) 23:14, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Birthplace

There's some websites that said he was born in Dallas, but others said he was born in Tennessee, several entertainment websites offer different places. I remembered Allmusic had dallas for a while before changing it to Tennessee, IMDB has Dallas. I think Tennessee is correct, but we need to be accurate about this. Nither I would use as a reliable source for his birthplace. Could the Dallas source be old vandalism that was kept for years? Where he was born in acually, and no usher fan websites sources aren't a reliable source nither. This page is filled with unreliable and dubious sources such as Rnbmusicblog.wordpress.com, Planet III, FMQB Zimbio, Entertainment Weekly and blogs.bet.com, and overreliance on billboard (which is reliable but 80% of the sources come from there). I'm thinking about delisting it. We need an interview source or something. Secret account 23:58, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Dallas is correct. Usher is listed in the Texas Birth Index - here and at Ancestry.com. Maybe that's original research, but NY Daily News '99 also says Dallas, so that's a source. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 18:51, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

As I added to Raymond v. Raymond please add the album selling four million copies worldwide.72.178.94.184 (talk) 20:31, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Voice Type

Since Usher is a singer, I believe his voice type should be included in the article. (Tenor, Baritone, etc) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.238.118.152 (talk) 01:57, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

underselling the bieber connection

Regardless of whatever anyone thinks of the quality of Justin Bieber as an artist compared to Usher - and I agree that at this moment in time the latter is leagues beyond the former in every respect - the clear ignoring of the effect of Bieber's success on Usher's own career and the absence of any discussion of the seriousness or ramifications of the mentor relationship with respect to Usher's own life/career in the main article can't help but appear as a prejudice on the part of wiki-editors of this article. It's glaring. Bamboom2 (talk) 19:04, 4 March 2011 (UTC) Bamboom2

Usher never sold 65 million album

But he sold 65 million records. Records = singles + albums. Look at the albums when you put it together it is something like 30 million and the hollywood reporter' link is talking about records not albums. That's why wiki has no credibility, so many people are wrong or do it on purpose. Be professionnal. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.201.215.172 (talk) 11:33, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

You have got to be joking. Confessions alone is over 20 million so I can't see how you got 30 total. Let me educate you.

My Way: 9 million,(yes 9) 8701: 8 million, Confessions 20+ million, Here I Stand: 5 million, and Raymond v. Raymond 2-3 million.

Now 9 + 8 + 20 + 5 + (we'll say) 2.5= 44.5 million albums sold worldwide. You could round that to 45 million albums or fill in the blank/500 k missing with up to date sales. So that's how you get the 45 million before. And Usher has sold at least 20 million singles. Considering the fact in 6 years Rihanna has sold 45 million singles, 20 for a career like Usher's is hardly a stretch. Believe me when I say he has sold a lot more than 65 million.
