Release Date[edit]

Wasn't this a launch title for the Nintendo Entertainment System? I thought it was released October 18th, 1985. Here it says June, 1986. --68.98.29.125 11:47, 10 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This sentence It is the only game to date where Mario has been the villain. bugs me.

I don't know Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land is, but I don't know if he is a villain in that game (I mean I know much about the game to know). Donkey Kong Junior → Donkey Kong Jr. — Referred to exclusively as Donkey Kong Jr. on the Japanese, North American, and European Nintendo sites ([1], [2], [3], [4], [5]).   • Oppose. The game's called "Donkey Kong Junior" in its original arcade version, on the title screen, on the cabinet's artwork, and on promotional materials of the time. The name "Junior" was also used for almost all ports of the time (see the boxes; on title screens it tended to vary - maybe for reasons of screen space, maybe not) except for the NES. Nintendo seems to have standardised on naming the games and the character as "Jr", as evident on various later Game&Watch and Gameboy releases, but it seems to me that such naming has more to do with the later ports and not with the original game. Specifically, the webpages provided by the requester above, point to, respectively:
  1. the Wii Virtual Console release, which is actually a NES port,
  2. the GBC game "Game & Watch Gallery 3",
  3. the Game & Watch handheld "Donkey Kong Jr."
  4. an interview where the name of the game is mentioned once - I doubt that the interviewee actually said "DONKEY KONG J-R"- he might as well said JUNIOR and it was written down as Jr.,
  5. again the Virtual Console/NES release.

My point is, that while the naming of the character and in the later ports might have changed, the original game's title is still "Junior" and I believe that the current title is OK but the later name change should be explained in the article. --Krótki (talk) 23:18, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If only the first game used the full spelling, then should not the current and most used be the title? We don't name articles off what came first, but what is the most effective title. I think if we're following the guidelines strictly, it would be Donkey Kong Jr. per WP:COMMONNAME (Google gives more than four times as many hits for "Donkey Kong Jr." as for "Donkey Kong Junior", and I have to admit that I did not know the latter rendition existed before seeing it in the Wikipedia article). However, I am split about the issue now that I know the American arcade cabinet had the title Donkey Kong Junior on it (partly because I don't agree completely with WP:COMMONNAME, as it produces such wonderful nonsense like "Nazi Party" as an article title). Hmm...what about the Japanese cabinets? Was it Donkey Kong Junior or Donkey Kong Jr. on those? Prime Blue (talk) 16:33, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't know that earlier, now I believe the game was called "Jr." in Japan from the start (see an arcade flyer [6] and info here - checking the title screen of the Japanese arcade in MAME would be a good idea). So, it looks that the game was renamed to "Junior" for the US release, and this name was inherited by US-produced console ports, while the later ports to NES, GameBoy etc, which originated in Japan, retained the original "Jr." name. OK, so I think that the page move can be justified - it seems that the Japanese name got more popular after years - but the original American arcade name must be clearly mentioned in the article. --Krótki (talk) 12:55, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The Japanese arcade version does not seem to have a title screen, so I guess the flyer is our only lead. The name change for America seems plausible to me, probably for intelligibility reasons. I agree that the article should mention that the American arcade version and some ports on non-Nintendo systems write out the title as Donkey Kong Junior. Levels vs stages (aka boards and screns)[edit]

The game itself uses the term "level" to refer to each full cycle of play with each level starting with stage one and ending with stage four. In the American version it isn't until level 4 that all four stages/boards/screens appear in the same level. In level 4 each stage is much harder than in previous levels, with all the enemies being much denser, and the red Snap Jaws are replaced after being eliminated. After level 4 each subsequent level is just slightly more difficult than the previous one.
