Where's the chart?[edit]

Isn't it a bit odd that an article dealing with a transliteration scheme doesn't offer anywhere (not even through an external link) a chart or something describing the transliteration scheme itself (i.e. the correspondences between the Tibetan and Latin letters in this transliteration)? Merely referencing the book where Wylie published half a century ago his transliteration scheme, a book I don't have access to, is of little help. Uaxuctum 17:41, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Good Call. I just put up two links, but both require font downloads. I suppose I should just suck it up and make a chart with images. User:Sengge 12:44, 20 Feb 2005 (EST)

the last letter[edit]

The final letter of the alphabet in this article looks more like a ma to me, are we sure it is correctly encoded.

Template Wylie_box[edit]

Wylie transliteration
Tibetan name

There is a template Wylie_box available. With this template it is possible to remove the Wylie transliteration out of contiguous English text to the right margin to improve readability.

If one writes, for example,
{{Wylie_box|english=dzogchen|wylie=rdzogs chen|comment=<br>standard Tibetan contraction of ''rdzogs pa chen po''}}
before the text then the box appears to the right of the text as shown in this example.
The first parameter 'english' sets the transcribed word or words and
the second parameter 'wylie' sets the Wylie transliteration of the corresponding Tibetan word or words.
The comment could be left empty. --Klimov 12:48, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removing IPA[edit]

I think the IPA phonetic transcription should be removed from the main table as some may think this is the Wylie translitteration. If needed the IPA could possibly be included in a seperate table.

I've restored the IPA. It takes about a sentence to say that the order in the table is Tibetan, Wylie, IPA. It is a tedious and comparatively lengthy ordeal to restore the IPA text from the proper revision. In the future, spend time thinking about how you can avoid destroying information. Consider that the ease in restoration determines the likelihood that a random passerby will perform it. ᛭ LokiClock (talk) 20:04, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
IMO Putting them together like this tends to confuse the difference between a transliteration system (Wylie) and a transcription (IPA) system. The IPA transcription of the sounds of the isolated Tibetan consonants more properly belongs in the article on the Tibetan script ~ perhaps we should insert the IPA transcriptions there and provide a link?. In his original article on the system Turrell V. Wylie does not detail the phonetics of the letters - though he did mistakenly label the system he outlined Tibetan transcription. Chris Fynn (talk)
Okay, I see the point here. It should not actually go under Tibetan script, but under Tibetan orthography, because there are multiple languages that use the script. {{For|IPA transcription of Tibetan|Tibetan orthography}} should be added to Wylie. ᛭ LokiClock (talk) 17:30, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
