Old discussion of name[edit]

I moved this page from from the colonial name Victoria Falls. The old talk page is at Talk:Victoria Falls. Ntk 04:26, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Conventionally, we use the English-language name for things. It's almost universally known as Victoria Falls. (I never heard of this other name until now. Walt Pohl 07:34, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)
First of all, cut and paste moves are bad, and violations of the GFDL. If in the future you want to move a page, please use the "Move" button at the top of the page. I have reverted the two pages to the previous status quo, until more discussion can be had. Being bold is fine, but please let the community have more than 20 minutes to reply to such a drastic change. I've copied this discussion to Talk:Victoria Falls, and think further discussion should occur there, for clairity. Gentgeen 10:39, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I have, 9 years later, moved the page from Victoria Falls. The government of Zimbabwe has indicated that it shall rename the falls to "Mosi-oa-Tunya" (source). In Zambia, the falls are already referred to as such (source). It seems to be fairly Bad faith to continue using the phrase "Victoria Falls" when it is neither the official name nor the local name. Even the page for Burma/Myanmar's largest city is Yangon, not Rangoon.--Simfan34 (talk) 03:24, 18 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the December 2013 discussion was to keep the article at "Victoria Falls". --Bejnar (talk) 14:42, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation page[edit]

The primary topic for Mosi-oa-Tunya is Victoria Falls. The hatnotes at Victoria Falls should handle the disambiguation. There is no need for this to be a disambiguation page. It should be reinstated as a redirect. Also there is no need for two disambiguation pages, one at "Mosi-oa-Tunya" and one at "Mosi oa Tunya". --Bejnar (talk) 14:42, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I made some changes, I don't have strong feelings, objections or disagreement with anything above. This was all in the context of Mosi-oa-Tunya (coin) launch. CT55555 (talk) 15:24, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 30 July 2022[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: reinstate the primary topic redirect and move the disambiguation page at this time, per the discussion below. This also allowed me to clean up a 9-year-old cross-namespace move. Dekimasuよ! 14:21, 13 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Mosi-oa-TunyaMosi-oa-Tunya (disambiguation) – Please see Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 July 30#Mosi-oa-Tunya for further details. In a nutshell, the claim is that this title, Mosi-oa-Tunya should be a redirect towards Victoria Falls for the following reason:

Victoria Falls is the primary topic and disambiguation should be handled by hatnotes located there. Note: On 25 July 2022, editor CT55555 changed these redirects into disambiguation pages, and the next day editor MB altered the hatnotes at Victoria Falls. --Bejnar (talk) 15:14, 30 July 2022 (UTC)

...I am neutral in this discussion. Steel1943 (talk) 22:37, 30 July 2022 (UTC) — Relisting. – robertsky (talk) 07:39, 8 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • oppose suggested target; target should be the "primary topic", namely Victoria Falls. --Bejnar (talk) 14:28, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Bejnar: So, you are disagreeing with yourself??? What you are stating in this vote is what the move request is for: The disambiguation page needs to be moved before the ambiguous title Mosi-oa-Tunya can become a redirect towards Victoria Falls. In other words, your "oppose" is actually a "support" (and technically a repeat vote since it's your nomination statement I moved here.) Steel1943 (talk) 18:55, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Steel1943: There are no votes just reasoning. I don't think a disambiguation page is required. --Bejnar (talk) 19:01, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's something for WP:AFD to get Mosi-oa-Tunya (disambiguation) deleted as a disambiguation apge after the page is moved. Your claim above is that Mosi-oa-Tunya should redirect to Victoria Falls, which falls in line with the request. Steel1943 (talk) 19:54, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Steel1943:That is why I posted it at redirects for discussion with a notice at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Disambiguations#Redirects for discussion; I wanted some discussion. Otherwise, now I see I should have just been bold and fixed it. --Bejnar (talk) 01:37, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Umm ... that's not how that works since someone created the disambiguation page, so might as well let this take its course now since this is where the discussion should take place due to the current setup. Steel1943 (talk) 05:21, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is bizarrely worded RM, not sure whether I should write "Support" or "Oppose". I Support redirecting Mosi-oa-Tunya to Victoria Falls as primary redirect. It shouldn't go to a disambiguation page. Disambiguation page is unnecessary, hatnotes are sufficient to do any other lifting. Walrasiad (talk) 05:22, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
