I just can't picture this being anything more than a dicdef. Davodd 11:45, Sep 2, 2004 (UTC)

  • We've got a tangle, here. It got undeleted. I'm obviously on the side of delete. Geogre 12:44, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • In light of what orthogonal finds, I really want to know WHY this was undeleted. Geogre 13:34, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • I.e. We may be getting played for suckers. There may be a particular porn search engine that has gamed its way into grabbing "picturesw" first, and we may be putting money in their click-through pockets. Delete is an assurance, I hope, and I would also say that redirect is off, since the redirect is still giving a link for Google purposes, and I want to know why it came back from the peaceful grave. • Might be worth mentioning in an article on words like "pr0n", if it's a common thing. Delete otherwise. --Ianb 12:50, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • Whatever else, the article makes no sense. Does only the word "picturesw" return a listing of porn sites, or does appending "w" to any word do it. What search engine? Google? msdn? Alexa? And will this always be true, or is it ephemeral? My guess is that some porn sites use the word "picturew" and it got indexed by a search engine. Possibly the poster has an interest in publicizing those porn sites. Delete. -- orthogonal 13:05, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • Follow-up: a search on "picturesw" (on Google) demonstrates that yes, this is one of many words that many porn sites use to get indexed by search engines. Indeed, one (and probably all) of the search results are "come-on" pages, pages that list a bunch of terms, get index by Google, and then when clicked on redirect to another page. The point is, the final destination page doesn't have all the terms, so it isn't found by as many searches. But it does have what's really being advertised. The search page is the fake lure that Google swallows and presents to the person doing the search. Probably, the terms on the page are obtained from a listing of terms most often searched for, that some search engines make available to the public.
So, the reconstruction is: lots of people in a furious search for porn, type "pictures" (or "[some word] pictures") into a search engine. Typing with one hand, they accidentally hit the "w" key, immediately above the "s" key that forms the last letter in the word "pictures". The search engine returns their search and records the search terms, "[something] pictures". The porn sites gets the list of most common search terms, and find "pictuesw" is often searched for. They incorporate it into their come-on pages, which display the page full of terms to the google-bot, and redirect anything other than the google-bot (they can distinguish the search spiders from browser by the user-agent the browser or spider send, and because conforming spiders request the "robots.txt" file before anything else).
The full set of terms on the "come-on" page I looked at is "JENNIFER LOPEZ SEX VIDEO! Caution: Adult Content! xxx free hairy leg woman beaches around world rhea harder ? And now I, uh, have some searching to do. For "flogging the bishop". -- orthogonal 13:22, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
    • Typing with one hand? Eww, delete. Bishonen 11:30, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • Redirect to Internet pornography and merge. Some of the above information could be added too. Andrewa 15:06, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • Agree with Andrewa, merge and redirect. [[User:Meelar|Meelar (talk)]] 16:26, 2004 Sep 2 (UTC)
    • But "picturesw" is merely one of many such search terms so employed. We're not going to redirect each one, and I don't think "picturesw" is to any great degree more notable than, say "hairy leg woman". -- orthogonal 16:41, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
      • Comment: I wouldn't support redirecting "hairy leg woman". I don't think it's a good parallel at all. Any better ones? I'd love to delete this and everything else useful to the porn industry, but that's not the role of an encyclopedia editor. The question is, Do we have encyclopedic information to index under this keyword?. I think you've demonstrated that we have quite a lot of it, so no change of vote. Andrewa 01:00, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • If someone can demonstrate that this is a purposeful and notable meme, and not just keyword-spamming, then I will vote to merge into Internet pornography and redirect. Until then, delete. Oh, and how long until Wikipedia is the first hit for picturesw? - Plutor 18:19, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • The concept of search engine manipulation deserves a write-up in Internet pornography and this could be a single-line example. (-- orthogonal, would you do the honors?) Delete this article. Rossami 23:50, 2 Sep 2004 (UTC)
